The Martyr.

Basic masochistic approach to life, self-denial to the extreme. The martyr denies themselves elements in life, not because they are unable to access these things (physical, mental, and emotional), but because they will not allow themselves to experience these things. Now "these things" need not be physical, they could be such things as a happy mind, a cheerful outlook on life, positive life enhancing thoughts and emotions. "These things" can also be negative attributes of life that, although unpleasant, are still part of life.

So, the martyr is caught in a very small and often miserable repertoire of experiences. The problem with the martyr is that sooner or later they will become "the blamer". You can't hold onto self denial without eventually blaming some outer source for your suffering.

Again it really is a matter of being aware, of being conscious, to the way we habitually live our lives. We can be a martyr, or any other "personality type", without realising it. It is then worth considering criticism from those whom we can trust and whom we know love us, or at least have our best interests at heart.
