Positive Thinking and Prayer

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Sutra 1.33

By cultivating attitudes of friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous, and disregard toward the wicked, the mind-stuff retains its undisturbed calmness.

Commentary

Our happiness cannot be in anyway involved with the unhappiness of others. If the manner in which we are becoming happy is making others unhappy, then we can be classified as wicked. This means that all areas of our lives need to be harmless. If we invest unethically, for instance with many of the high street banks who are little more than tarted up crooks - they invest in anything that makes money, tobacco, drugs, gun running, armaments, pharmaceuticals - then we are not being spiritual, we are being wicked, and therefore can expect no peace of mind for ourselves or others. How would you like it if your crop land was turned over to the growth of tobacco or other cash crops?

It is worth thinking about these things very deeply before we act upon flight or fancy.

"How will my actions effect others and myself?"
