We are Things that Dreams are Made Of.

PLAYING YOUR CHARACTER ON THE WORLD STAGE

Everything belongs to the Universal and Unified life principle - The One Universal Spirit - God. Everything about us is an ordinary, generic expression of this lifeforce. Only the subjective ego takes it all personally and thus creates many painful complexes in us that distract us from relative harmonious and satisfying living. The first thing we need to do is identify and understand what the ego is and then gradually dissolve this inner disease. This takes time, practice, and patience. Rome was not built in a day.

So now we understand that our True Identity is not of Mind - this world stage and surrounding scenery - but we are still experiencing our character on the world stage.

Now we learn how to watch our character, how to play a part, but not be attached.

CHARACTER WATCHING - WITNESSING.

This is made easier by replacing all our references to "me and mine" with "the character" or 'his' / 'her' or 'the man' / 'the woman'. So "my body" becomes "my character's body", "my life" becomes "my character's life", "What am I doing now?" becomes "what is he doing now?", "I am sad" becomes "She is sad" and so on.

Try this approach for a couple of days and notice the difference. This technique helps to lose that sense of a subjective and egotistical "me", reduces that level of self-consciousness, and increases a balanced, moderate, objective, practical, and matter-of-fact attitude to life. "Such is life for everyone," we begin to say.

At the same time keep reminding yourself that you are "not the body, nor the mind (chakras 1 to 6), Immortal Self am I", keep reminding yourself of your True, blissful, observing identity. The ability to observe the changing conditions and activities of the chakras of the mind (chakras 1 to 6) is the cultivation of non-attachment which is a very important skill in spiritual life.

This exercise will vastly help the experience of detachment - "Being in the world, but not of it." This is why the great Drama Teacher, The Buddha, told us that "attachment leads to pain".

He is giving us a nice piece of advice on how to play our character. If our character is getting attached to all these things in the play - forgetting that he is in a play - then our character becomes anxious, worried, fearful, and sad. The part becomes one of fear, bitterness, sorrow, anger, and tragedy. But we can help our character by realising that he is just a part in a play and that behind the diverse appearances in The Mind, everything is One Unified Field of Consciousness - WE ARE ALWAYS ONE, so what is there to be desired? What is there to be gained or lost? Only props and parts in the play!

If an actor goes off stage and doesn't come back into our characters play, then he gets sorrowful and lonely, but he has forgotton that he is just on the stage. The character becomes peaceful and happy when he realises that it's only a play, it's all just a bit of fun, he is Self, pure and unalloyed blissful consciousness, beyond the world stage and it's appearances of birth and death. "I AM THAT", says our character, and he is happy once more. The MindPlay cannot disturb him anymore. He knows. He has banished ignorance and sorrow with the lamp of Wisdom.

This peace and happiness is not based upon the world and its contents, it is not based upon the conditions that the character is experiencing (whether they be positive or negative), it is based upon understanding of the nature of the Appearance of the World and the True Identity of the World Stage and all the characters upon it. This enlightened understanding is called VIDYA.

DETACHMENT INCREASES OUR ABILITIES TO PLAY OUR CHARACTER.

This may sound paradoxical, but the more detached we are - the more we realise that we are playing a part on the world stage - then the deeper we can get into our character. This is because the fears and anxieties of attachment are reduced, if not eliminated. We are not afraid of The Mind, knowing it to be just a play, and knowing that our True Identity is the very source of The Mind - Pure, Unalloyed, Blissful Consciousness. We realise that the Mind is like a dream.

But remember that there are rules and laws that govern the MindPlay. So it's best to learn these and adhere to them - they are for our own good and well being. These laws are the 10 Commandments of Christianity and Judaism, the Yamas and Niyamas of Yoga, the 10 Virtues of Buddhism, in fact there is no religion without these moral and ethical codes. They are for our own good. They are the guidelines for navigating the laws that govern the play.
