PSYCHOLOGICAL PROJECTION

"Projecting our problems onto other people."

Projection concerns eternalizing the issues that we should be dealing with ourselves. Usually we project onto others many of the issues and problems that we need to address within ourselves, or are unable to manage properly. Projection is very irresponsible as we are simply passing the problem onto somebody else. Eventually this becomes the psychological technique of blame.

We soon project our disappointments and problems onto other people, it is somehow their fault, we become a blamer. Ultimately it is the person who projects that loses, as we never really sort out our own problems.

Strong expectations concerning other people is also a form of projection. We are projecting our own wishes, desires and aversions onto them and then we often get disappointed because they will not, do not, or cannot live up to them.

Classic racism is an example of psychological projection; "It's all their fault," says the racist. Also, jealousy and resentment of others good fortune is also a form of projection, "Aren't they lucky, it never happens to us (me)."

There are psychological techniques to overcome this problem.

  1. Recognition of this trait in ones own character is the first step.

  2. Finding our what issues we are projecting is the next.

  3. Then taking responsibility and sorting out these issues finishes them off.
