L’exposition propose une relecture inédite de l’histoire de l’abstraction depuis ses origines jusqu’aux années 1980, articulant les apports spécifiques de près de cent dix « artistes femmes. « Elles font l’abstraction » donne l’occasion de découvrir des artistes qui constituent des découvertes tant pour les spécialistes que pour le grand public. L'exposition valorise le travail de nombre d’entre elles souffrant d’un manque de visibilité et de reconnaissance au-delà des frontières de leur pays. Elle se concentre sur les parcours d’artistes, parfois injustement éclipsées de l’histoire de l’art, en revenant sur leur apport spécifique à l’histoire de l’abstraction.
