User:Khabat4545 engaging in block evasion

A recent sockpuppet investigation on the English Wikipedia has turned up a number of users who are confirmed to a sock of Khabat4545 and are blocked as socks thereof. Some of these users have been active on commons after the master's indefinite block from Commons was issued on 6 April 2021 for abusing multiple accounts. These accounts include:

Block request for User:RudolphousBot

After having observed nonsense entries by User:RudolphousBot for more than 5 times, I think it is time to act.

In the mentioned case the same problem as in all the other cases exists. The bot puts files like this BAC 1-11 aircraft into categories of "(country) photographs taken on date dddddd", here Category:United Kingdom photographs taken on 2019-03-12, although it is completely clear by the file name that it was taken at BHX on 22-07-1991.

Actually, this aircraft had been broken up at Durban Airport in 2008 already.

The error is that "RudolphousBot" takes the upload date as the date the photograph had been taken, which obviously is nonsense, and put it in a completely wrong category.

The author's own request states: "Administrators: if this bot is malfunctioning or causing harm, please block it.".

Request unprotection for File:Syrian_Civil_War_map.svg

File was locked after an apparent edit war in 2021 – the lock length is 3 years. Because it is only editable by administrators, the map hasn't been updated in more than 13 months. Since the situation is volatile (being a war) and there have been markable changes in the dynamic, the map is thus very out of date. One has camera details and may be their own copyright. Track record suggests not. One is a definite re-upload for now the third time of the same copyright infringing picture and one has no camera details, so is suspect.

The copyright infringing pic is up fo SD and may have gone already. The dubious one has been nonimated for a deletion discussion. The third I have left for administrator decisions.

Sockpuppetry and Impersonation

TOA has uploaded a picture here impersonating a celebrity. That picture is subject to deletion discussion. SM is "hard blocked" on en WP for trolling and sockpuppetry, but has not yet edited on Commons. Bishonen implemented the hard block on en WP and may have more information here. Vanamonde93 may have extra information, or may need to deliver it offline based on their comments at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Sumedh Mudgalkar SM.jpg.

The private info that I have isn't really needed here; it's enough to note that both accounts are engaged in self-promotion of sorts, that may reasonably be construed as trolling, and the second account is a violation of the en.wiki sockpuppetry policy. I softblocked Sumedh Mudgalkar at first, purely because their account name was that of a well-known person, but then changed to a hardblock when Vanamonde pointed out that it was a sock. Also, SM had by then ignored my question about adding the image TOA had uploaded to Commons to two different articles - implicitly making out it was a portrait of two different people. Sockpuppetry

RespectCE (talk · contribs) has been found using multiple accounts on meta wiki and English Wikipedia by CUs. They used PlanespotterA320 (talk · contribs) as a sockpuppet. I suspect more socks could be found here because they are more active here. Lemonaka (talk) 13:55, 29 October 2022 (UTC)

I fully admit to using the RespectCE account, however I have not done anything malicious with it (you can see from the edit logs in Russian and English Wikipedia that I have done a lot of good work, adding copyright information to fair-use photos, creating stubs to enable wikidata linking, updating articles that were badly out-of-date/obsolete). I have to say that I am very concerned though that some people here are taking this REALLY too far - I've previously expressed my concern about attempts to erase the existance of genocided Crimean Tatar subethnoses (as editors of ruwiki tried to do and claimed they weren't real), and immediatly after I was blocked in enwiki today, one editor unilaterally redirected the english-language counterparts of those very same articles that the chauvanists on ruwiki were so adament needed to be deleted/weren't real. I have never used socking on Commons to pursue any agendas or goals, I only ask that the Ukrainian editors who are very upset by my RfC about the use of 1488 and other Nazi stuff in their wiki not punish the entire Crimean Tatar nation for my mistakes and not hurt Crimean content as "punishment".--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 14:01, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
The one who find you using multiple account is Tamzin, not me. Don't repeat anything about Ukrainian Wikipedia, Russian Wikipedia or something like that, focus on your sockpuppetry, crosswiki abuse or stuff. I don't care who found my sock, I didn't take any steps to try to hide that it was a sock (no change it editing patterns, no VPN), because I DIDN'T CARE about getting caught, I just care about fixing some things that really need to be fixed in Wikipedia. It's not exactly a secret that sockpuppetry for block evasion is so widespread here, and I never used it to double-vote or anything sinister, but to continue improving wikipedia. I know I'll probably be blocked here to, and frankly I've lost interest in Commons for the most part (only so much PD material I can find). I know that no amount of ass-kissing will ever get me unblocked on any wiki, I've been told I have a snowball's chance in hell to get unblocked in enwiki and can't even appeal it in ruwiki. But unlike other editors who have socks, my intentions were pure, and now I only ask that the content I contributed to and subjects of my articles not be denigrated or erased in revenge. I used to be a celebrated wikipedia editor (editor of the week, mind you), and I know that you wouldn't be dragging me here if I hadn't made the mistake of creating an RfC about Ukrainian wikipedia's well-known nazi problem to motivate Russian editors to cut me slack. Let's all stop pretending everything here is so pure, because we all know exactly how Wikipedia works - the loudest and strongest always win. "abuse"? Is writing about corporate scandals that was previously removed in their articles by COI editors "abuse"? Is adding file copyright information to fair-use photos "abuse"? Is filing a good-faith RfC on meta about the disturbing popularity of a pro-Nazi userbox in a particular wiki "abuse"? Tell me, point to a mainspace edit in ANY langauge wiki that you think constitutes abuse. Did I use this account to double-dip voting? No. Did I use this account to self-promote? No. Did I do anything that hurt the fundamental goal of Wikipedia? No! So there is no reason to say that I abused any wiki.     My understanding is that Commons does not block people for evading a block unless they are blocked on Commons. However, COM:BLOCK explicitly prohibits [a]busing multiple accounts to mislead, deceive, disrupt, distort consensus or to evade blocks or other sanctions. I don't see an active attempt to evade sanctions on Commons; the purpose of using the sock account on Commons seems to have been to evade sanctions on other wikis by concealing the connection between the two accounts so that the master is not the account uploading photos that the sock is almost instantly adding to an article. This is an attempt to mislead on other wikis, but it isn't actually causing disruption to Commons processes. So long as the copyright mistakes taken between the two accounts would not have led to sanctions had they been committed by one account, I don't see anything that warrants a local block on Commons. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 04:45, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
  • I have indeffed RespectCE and blocked PlanespotterA320 for six months. We do not block users solely because of conflicts on other wikis, but they can be useful to shed light on user habits. In this case, it is clear to me that RespectCE does not meet any of the legitimate uses for secondary accounts (note that the Commons policy page is a soft redirect to the enwiki page), and that it was being used on Commons primarily to avoid detection of the account for block evasion on enwiki. Using Commons as a platform to engage in disallowed behavior on other wikis is not acceptable.
While PlanespotterA320 has done some very good work on Commons, they have been getting increasingly hostile and conflict-prone over the last several months. They need to take some time to cool off and figure out how to avoid escalating conflicts. I am very open to hearing an unblock sooner, or for another admin to unblock sooner, if there is evidence of a an attitude change, and I hope that the block ends up needing to be much shorter than six months. I think it's an overstatement to say that this map has been "repeatedly" warred over since its creation in 2011. Anyone can see that between 2013 and 2022, for nine years no one has even touched it. The issue of this map's factual inaccuracy resurfaced only recently because additional historical maps were found that clearly contradicted it.
Also, I would like to draw attention to the fact that Chipmunkdavis personally deleted my contribution repeatedly on six separate occasions. It is, therefore, confusing for me that Chipmunkdavis speaks about these "other" warring users in third person; indeed, he is one of them. Not to mention, there is no moral high ground in defending an inaccurate graphic just because it has been that way for a long time.
I personally think locking that map will be a form of censorship. If it had been locked, it's incomplete and inaccurate state could have gone unaddressed for many more years. At least now somebody's paying attention.--Aunyu (talk) 01:34, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

Could you please engage with / issue a warning to Rul Joules?

During the process creating a page about a book on Wikipedia, the user Rul Joules uploaded a copyrighted image of the book cover to Commons, with the license CC BY-SA, and incorrect attribution information.

I just recently searched their upload log, I discovered that they have (currently) uploaded no less than 27 copyrighted images that have been deleted. In fact, when I search their non-deleted uploads, the list is empty, implying that every image they have uploaded to Commons has been deleted due to copyright.

Could you please notify this user that their image upload behavior is not acceptable / against Commons policy / issue appropriate warnings? It seems inevitable that they will upload yet another copyrighted image soon. Neuroxic (talk) 16:07, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

It's an account called User:にっしーーー, but I guess it's suspected to be a multiple account of User:Rory trains.

Shows the image posting record of accounts that have been blocked so far, not just User:にっしーーー（User:Rory trains,User:にっしーーー,User:西内 正）.

  1. Most of the images posted are related to train stations, mainly in the Tohoku and Kanto areas of Japan.
  2. Sometimes the image file name is in English, sometimes in Japanese. Also, as an example, in the case of ticket gates, the suffix is often "Gates" or "Gate". Some ticket vending machines are in Japanese.
  3. In images taken outside, such as in a station building or on a platform, the main part is often not illuminated.
    1. As an example, when comparing these Gate images[6][7], the resolution and composition (brightness and tilt) seem to match.
  4. There are many images that include customers.

It may be better to look at the situation a little more, but when I look at the editing trend, I got the impression that there are similarities to past examples.

KAP Jasa and politically motivated vandalism

KAP Jasa made this edit which is a clear vandalism irrespectively of what we think of an ongoing war (the link must lead to the lists of monuments onwiki and not to smth else). For the record, I agree that a one-year block is extremely harsh and serves no useful purpose — and I say this as someone who had many (many!) reasons to deplore Albedo’s categorization habits. Indef block for vandals and trolls, 24h blocks to cool off hotheads, and anything in between is more punitive than preventive. If Albedo cannot really be trusted with the rename/more ability, then remove it and let Albedo do the rest of his work unperturbed.

I was informed by user:Kharkivian that Albedo makes unconsensus renamings. After checking his contributions I confirm that. He already has warnings on this userpage [29], but he ignored it. The media file "File:রেসকোর্স ময়দানে হোসেন শহীদ সোহ্‌রাওয়ার্দীর জানাজা (১৯৬৩).jpg" has generated some controversies recently.

At the picture, a substantial crowd is seen amassing in the Racecourse Field, which is currently known as Suhrawardi Uddan. Regarding this picture, there are three claims.

1. Some claim that this is Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardi's funeral.

2. Some claim that this is the funeral procession for former president Ziaur Rahman. The third and least important argument is that this gathering intends to welcome Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Dhaka. The first two arguments are made by two of the confronting major political parties in the region since those parties' two founding leaders are the first two historical people. These two political parties have histories of conflicts among them that cost thousands of lives.

The file now holds the title that supports the aforementioned first claim. The title reads Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardi’s funeral at Racecourse field in English. Before moving, the title was File:Ramna Race Course Queen Elizabeth II 1961 which was in favor of the third claim which was again supported by a reliable third party source.

The first assertion is correct according to a recent investigation by a fact-checking organization, and they have since sued Wikimedia Commons for spreading misinformation. The filename has been updated to reflect the current situation in light of the fact-checking investigation report, and the initial source has been replaced with the article link of the fact-checking organization. Widespread public interest in this file has been generated after the fact-checking report, including rival organization members. According to the Bangla text of the "Source" in the summary paragraph, "This image is from The Daily Star, but The Daily Star isn't the major source. The Daily Star most likely copied this image from Facebook and published it again in 2018, misrepresenting it as a crowd waiting to see Queen Elizabeth." This clearly supports the first of the aforementioned claims, which supports the assertion of one of the political parties. As the page history is constantly visible, this raises risk for the uploader, file mover, and editors of the page.

Can anyone please cite the relevant policy on this?

  • Are blocks on en:WP (or other projects) transferred to, or enforced on, Commons? (I understand that they're not, but do we state that anywhere?)
  • Are sockpuppet blocks likewise transferred to Commons?
  • Are sockpuppet blocks applied on Commons, in relation to accounts that have not been active on Commons? (we have a policy that non-problematic alt accounts are tolerated here)
  • In what circumstances should behaviour elsewhere (short of a SanFranBan) turn into a Commons block or ban?

Concerning sockpuppet blocks, block evasion is still not acceptable. If CUs on any other project have confirmed the user identity to that of a user blocked on Commons this is an automatic block. This happened a lot in the past. I personally tend to think that even without CU, if a user on another project obviously identical to a user blocked on Commons we should block them. Global locks are still relevant, but otherwise we do not block users here if they are socks of non-blocked accounts and do not exhibit problematic behavior here. If someone is blocked on WP as "a sock" (let's say there's unquestioned CU evidence for that), but that other account has never appeared at Commons, then what's to be done?

Their talk page (and talk page archive) are full of warnings for this exact sort of thing, though they only got notified with the {{End of copyvios}} yesterday. Despite that, they have continued to upload photos from Iranian State media that lack both an author and a valid free license, including File:47-Fateh 313 rocket-موشک فاتح 313.jpg ({{Tasnim}} notes that all images without explicitly watermarked attribution to agency photographers are presumed to be outside this license). I am currently in the process of ensuring that all of their uploads cited to Iranian state media are tagged for review by a license reviewer—many appear to lack a valid free license or lack author information, and a large number are currently up for DR—but in the meantime the user needs to be blocked for copyright violations as they keep uploading non-free Iranian photos. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 23:32, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

I think this user has good faith and most of their uploads are OK. Aside from problematic files that Red-tailed hawk mentioned above, they are uploading duplicate files (For example, see File:51-witness helicopter 278 -بالگرد شاهد ۲۷۸.jpg, File:36-Witness 278 helicopter -بالگرد شاهد ۲۷۸.jpg, File:54-witness helicopter 278 -بالگرد شاهد 278.jpg; we already have the original file and its cropped version) and it takes too much time to check them. I wonder why the system does not prevent uploading duplicates. I agree that the reporting system is complex and onerous. I appear to have found a gadget tool that will handle the details for me, but prior to discovery of the "Perform batch task" gadget, I was unwilling to request mass-deletion of files. And mass-deletion is a frequent thing here, unlike enwiki or other projects, so the friction should be commensurate with the frequent need to do it. The log shows that they were blocked on 27 June 2022 for: Adding out of project scope content after warnings. This is incorrect on both counts:

  • The upload log shows that they uploaded 12 files before this block, only two of which were deleted before this block. One more upload (Erection of the penis.jpg) has since been deleted on the basis of a generic deletion request, where no specific reason for deletion was given. More importantly, the remaining uploads have all been kept at a recent deletion request.
  • The user talk page history shows that no warnings were given there before the block.

I asked the blocking admin and the admin who declined the unblock request about this, but neither provided a satisfactory response. The latter closed the recent deletion request for the remaining uploads as ‘keep’, but maintains that the uploader should remain blocked for uploading out of scope files! That is outrageous!
