Comment Outstanding scene. But the sky shows
colour banding and I am not happy with the fact that this nomination is giving no EXIF data about the camera used and is only provided at 9.8 megapixels. --August (talk) 20:18, 22 August 2024 (UTC)

- August, By considering your suggestions I have made some changes. Is it OK? --Shagil Kannur (talk) 11:08, 25 August 2024 (UTC)
Oppose Thank you for editing! The image was improved slightly. It has some more detail and proper EXIF data now. But the colour banding is still visible in the form a pixelated parts at the sky. Additionally it is cropped intensively from 21 megapixels down to 11.6 megapixels. So all in all I really love the scene with its composition and light, but technicaly this image might have trouble even becoming Quality Image so I can sadly not consider it FP.

Oppose "At least the chin shouldn't be cropped" was a pretty fair judgment, in my opinion. It also seems that the flash fired, which creates an artificial harsh light. Maybe this nomination / renomination is more based on a sentimental affect, if this cat was a personal pet? Comment High level of detail but lead room missing in my view. Very tight crop at the right -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:12, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- I'm taking as reference pictures uploaded on [1]https://www.planespotters.net/ or [2]https://www.jetphotos.com/ where pictures' crop are very tight. So it is very usual to have this kind of picture with narrow crop for aicraft. I totally understand that it can be considered a lack a lead room but in my view, the picture represents only the object itself, not really the fact that he is landing on a runway. If you think that the picture will be more interesting, I can enlarge the crop and change ratio from 2:3 to 16:9. If I keep original ratio, I will have airport fences at the bottom of the picture. Shougissime (talk) 18:31, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
Oppose Sorry, the crop is way too tight, and the overall image isn't compelling. An attractive sky or background, or dramatic lighting or angles are important for an FP of an airplane. I would crop fairly tightly behind the plane, but give it some room in front, the same way you've done for pictures of bicyclists. You don't need to crop to a particular ratio, do what's best for the image. I wouldn't use Jetphotos or Planespotters as guides for featured content on Commons. Acroterion (talk) 21:44, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for feedback. Some pictures of airplanes are FP with a blue sky

Why this picture can't be accepted so? I will add some lead room at the nose of the aircraft. Shougissime (talk) 13:37, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

- I did a mistake, corrected. Shougissime (talk) 13:51, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, that's a much better crop. My comments about composition and backgrounds remain. This is a good picture of an aircraft about to land, but not an FP. Acroterion (talk) 01:21, 2 September 2024 (UTC)

- Thanks for your review. Aperture F/10 and time 1 /250 s is the maximum combination I could get here, and only 100 mm focal length. Going closer would have scared the birds. Focus was of course intentional -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:24, 25 August 2024 (UTC)
Support I have told people about the corkscrew fallus, this image offers proof. As I understand it, the mallard's has barbs on it. It not a pretty picture, so to speak, but it documents something rarely observed, and the image brings into clear and sharp detail the evolution of a duck's fallus. --Needsmoreritalin (talk) 01:44, 24 August 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, having browsed through the categories, I noticed we have incredibly few images of this type, and even fewer quality images. I totally agree this one will never make a poster for a living room :-) But it's also original and perhaps more educational than a bunch of solitary ducks walking or swimming on a pond. Thank you very much -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:14, 25 August 2024 (UTC)

Support Pretty rare capture. The focused area is very sharp etc. The light is not thrilling, but it is favourable insofar as it avoids harsh shadows (which would obscure the, hem, private parts). And it’s unavoidable that the subjects look away. We have promoted misc. bird photos etc. of rather mediocre quality because of the rarity of the species; hence we should promote this rare scene, too. – Aristeas (talk) 13:31, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

Agree with Poco and Zzzs. This is clearly a revenge vote. This user has a long history of characterized behavioral problem:
- Reported twice at COM:ANU for explicit revenge votes. Warned in 2015 (see the huge list of disrupted nominations in this consensual section).
- Blocked 2 weeks in 2024 for recurrence.
- Recently also on an other Poco's nomination (using the same words as him in this unsuccessful nomination). -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:22, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

Oppose Agree, its not so good among your bird shots. Not so sharp, background is also not so photogenic (colors, reflexition). Obviously is much easier when they are on the tree than in the water, for background. --Mile (talk) 08:32, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
Weak oppose Swimming ducks are quite easy to spot and photograph. The FPC guidelines state "A bad picture of a very difficult subject is better than a good picture of an ordinary subject." This specimen has a rather ordinary plumage color. The resolution of the picture is not huge, given the large background, and the reflection of the head suffers from water turbulence. Sorry -- Basile Morin (talk) 23:08, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

Weak oppose The picture is fine but not among our finest. The compo is nothing extraordinary and although at this time of the day the lighting could be very interesting (with beautiful colors in the sky), it didn't work here. Poco a poco (talk) 19:29, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
Weak oppose I agree with Poco a poco, the attention goes to the right and the window with lights but there is nothing really interesting there, I think the photo lacks some truly important or main element. I would have liked to see people working or doing their daily chores to give it a lively image, also the colors look very dull or shadowed, perhaps the denoise was a little too much. --Wilfredor (talk) 01:21, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

Support Impressive building, nice composition and well-handled daytime light. The level of detail at full resolution is maybe slightly lacking but at most sizes it's pretty good. I've made a suggestion for cropping a little off the left and bottom to get rid of the cut-off window and help with the symmetry a bit, which I think could make this very good image even better. Support Excellent. – Aristeas (talk) 15:32, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
I will minus it; 1st: Quality would be somehow OK with older sensor, APS-C or similar, but i saw this new toy make 9504 × 6336 px, while we have 6 × 4 kPx. Looking at focal it wasnt croped to zoom, at least not in full - i see lens had some biger zoom. 2nd: mirroring is a bit out, especially bridge of left. Crop is also so-so. --Mile (talk) 19:03, 31 August 2024 (UTC) p.S. Much beter option.Oppose
- Thank you very much for your review and for pointing out something to improve. Regarding resolution, I fully understand your point of view. Yes, the camera offers 9504 × 6336, but in my opinion, the technical quality is not (only) about pixel count – I always try to get as close as possible to the ideal case, where every pixel of the image carries meaningful information. And because of the bayer pattern of camera sensors, this is not achievable in general, regardless of the lens used. And besides that, there are sometimes things like noise and interpolation artifacts after lens/perspective correction, etc…
- For example this image (not mine) was approved as a quality image, but imho absolutely lacks the quality to justify the 85 MB and 19 732 × 11 839 pixels. Downscaled to half the dimensions, it does not lose any detail but appears to be sharper and the interpolation artifacts are less disturbing.
- So I work in two modes:
- 1) When possible, I take pictures with pixel shift. This eliminates the negatives of the bayer pattern and noise as well. I produce these images in full res 9504 × 6336. The theoretical output is 19008 × 12672, but again, in practice it does not have enough detail to justify it. In my tests, in perfect conditions 11000 × 7333 was the largest reasonable size.
- For example this was created with pixel shift and represents what I consider a good level of detail to justify the resolution. You can almost count individual stones in the walls.
- 2) If pixel shift is not possible, I take the picture in full res and use it as an advantage to perform (if needed) noise reduction, lens correction, geometry correction, cropping etc… and than produce a lower res picture that offers good sharpness and level of detail and again eliminates artifacts and the bayer pattern issues. For example filmmakers work the same way: many films are shot in 6K to produce a good quality 4K final output.
- In this case, I didn’t use pixel shift and didn’t involve any lens/geometry correction. So I can adjust the crop and upload a full res file if the consensus here on Wikipedia is that full res is the preferred way considering all pros and cons. Lynx1211 (talk) 08:18, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
Comment I was checking that yesterday, if you put hi-res setting straight to 24 MPx, since i saw you put many on that resolution. But i saw you have this 3 options. So i suppose you can put Hi-res to 26 MPx straight, which i would not argue, since sometime i dont see any good point of using 80 MPx or even 233 MPx. Here about Hi-res. While i think on single shot we could leave orignal size. Now i dont know if you have handheld Hi-Res, compared to your image i am sure it wasnt made with. I would expect better even from single. About photo from "laser" it's good made, but scarry size, no use of it, isn't mosaic or similar. I still see your best pic of St. Michel that i mentioned; light, quality. I am not sure for "So I can adjust the crop and upload a full res file if the consensus here on Wikipedia is that full res...", if photos will become so large who knows. I would use mentioned, put to 26 Mpx straight. --Mile (talk) 15:39, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
Comment Sidenote from another α7R IV user: On the α7R IV (which was used here), the cited 26 MP and 15 MP options apply to JPEG output only. They are not available for raw image (ARW) files, which should be preferred for all high-quality photographs. Since the α7R V, Sony offers also medium and small raw image (ARW) files, but from misc. expert discussions I have learnt that these formats should not be used for demanding photographs (like this one) because the creation of medium and small raw image files from the full raw image data requires the data to be demosaiced and hence results in a slight loss of dynamic range which can hinder the highlight reconstruction by good raw image converters like Lightroom/ACR. This means: To get the best results for high-quality photography, one should use (a) on the α7R (I) to IV: the uncompressed raw image format; (b) on the α7R V: the full-size losslessly compressed raw image format, avoiding both Sony’s old lossy ARW compression and the new medium and small raw image formats or restricting them to less important scenes. – Aristeas (talk) 11:11, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
Comment A lot of bothering reading those reviews, now i see Sony 7 IV 26 MPx option is a more a fake. I supposed it work RAW and put downsized JPEG. But i would love to see uncompresed RAW in full size, not on 16 GB RAM (if it works ?) but more 32 GB. So, pay camera same as PC, to work normaly. I dont bother much even in handheld Hi-Res, jpeg out, not even on best compresion. But dont worry too much, normaly croped sensor win. --Mile (talk) 12:50, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

The specific name arcatus means “arched”, an allusion which Cuvier did not explain but it may refer to the horseshoe shaped mark behind the eye. Support Remembers me the "Three blind mice" in the James Bond film Dr. No --Llez (talk) 12:20, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
Comment Sorry, but there is a problem with the file description and naming. The painting is not the one attributed to Pieter Bruegel the Elder, that is located at the en:Museo di Capodimonte, at Naples. It's instead the one in Paris. So, it should be attributed to Pieter Brueghel the Younger, even though the Google Art project says something different. Besides, on the Louvre Museum website, the attribution to Pieter Brueghel the Younger is presented just as an old one. I did just correct the article on en.wiki: en:The Blind Leading the Blind. --Harlock81 (talk) 12:45, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, but how do you know this is a copy by Brueghel the Younger? I guess the Louvre is an authoritative reference. Yann (talk) 13:34, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- For sure, this file does not reproduce the one painted by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The Louvre says: "La parabole des aveugles, d'après Pieter I Brueghel", The Blind leading the Blind according to, not by, Pieter I Brueghel. Also, at the attribution: School of Pieter I Brueghel, etc. The museum does not say it was painted by Pieter Brueghel the Older. The attribution of the painting in the Google Art Project is wrong, and consequently here. So, description and naming are wrong, for sure. This file reproduce the painting to which this category refers: Category:Parable of the Blind by Pieter Brueghel the Younger. The attribution of the painting to Pieter Brueghel the Younger is presented as dated by the Louvre Museum. So, the name of the file and the name of the category should not refer to Pieter Brueghel the Younger, but to the School of Pieter Brueghel the Older. The author should be considered unknown. Finally, the oldest painting, attributed to Pieter Bruegel the Elder, is the one conserved in Naples. Consequently, this one is a copy, painted by some pupil of him. --Harlock81 (talk) 13:55, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Sure, it is a copy of the painting from Capodimonte, but attributing it to Brueghel the Younger is certainly wrong. Yann (talk) 14:01, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, but I don't understand your point. This picture reproduce the same painting to which this category refers, or not? I'm not saying that Brueghel the Younger is the author. It could be a way to distinguish two artworks that are similar: the one once attributed to Brueghel the Younger (and conserved in Paris), and the one painted by Bruegel the Elder (and conserved in Naples). For now, this file is in the wrong category, it is attributed to the wrong painter, and its title is misleading. --Harlock81 (talk) 14:19, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Images in Category:Parable of the Blind by Pieter Brueghel the Younger are of so poor quality that it is difficult to say. Anyway the attribution there may also be wrong, and we need external references, not self-references from Commons. For all we know, it may be a copy by Bruegel the Elder himself. Yann (talk) 14:41, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks for your answer. The artwork hanging in the Louvre Museum, that is the one reproduced here, is the one once attributed to Brueghel the Younger (this does not imply that Brueghel the Younger actually painted it). This category refers to the artwork (once, in my opinion) attributed to Brueghel the Younger. It seems logical to me the conclusion that the category refers to the painting hanging in the Louvre Museum. Instead, you are not excluding that there is another artwork of Brueghel the Younger to which the category may refer. I'm quite sure that is not the case, but ok, let's go on. --Harlock81 (talk) 15:32, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

Oppose I think this could be cropped for better framing. It's not bad, but I think it falls just shy of Featured Picture with its current composition. Maybe shave a little negative space off the left side and see if that looks better. --DarthCloakedGuy (talk) 08:08, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
- This is actually an uncropped image. I felt I got it right in the camera. I have two other versions of this "pose" and then several more at 160mm to get the fox sitting (full body) and two when it lay down shot at 200mm. This was my favorite of the bunch. I felt the negative space helped as that was the direction the fox was facing. And I liked the portrait. It was a wonderful moment for me. The fox came out of the tree line and headed towards me, then sat in the middle of the road before laying down in the street. I just sat there with it for a few minutes until it left. - Unlike VI, each species does not need to have an FP. An FP is supposed to be one of the finest images in Commons. I look for something exceptional -- colours, posture, action, lighting, composition, etc along with high technical quality. I compare it to others in the FP gallery where it will be placed if promoted. See eg this image of a similar posture, f/8, etc -- much better sharpness throughout. Tagooty (talk) 14:39, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Not all birds live in tropical areas and therefore haven't beautiful colors, so they do not deserve to have FPs. El Golli Mohamed (talk) 19:41, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

Oppose I agree with Tagooty this bird is not the prettiest I've seen and detail is just ok. Even if we have no FPs of this bird and that's a relevant information of the nomination, it cannot be a reason of weight to make it FP. I have documented hundreds of species underwater and I find many of them not worthy for FP because they don't have any interesting features. Poco a poco (talk) 15:57, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

- @El Golli Mohamed, you need to stop revenge voting. Just because someone doesn't agree with one of your images becoming a featured picture does not mean you should revenge vote. They are only criticising the photograph, not the photographer. No one should expect all of their photos to become featured pictures. The community loves your photos, but some don't meet a certain standard. It's not worth being blocked for and losing a significant contributor of FPCs on Commons. This behaviour is unacceptable, and I strongly recommend you stop. Zzzs (talk) 00:11, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

Question I hate to ask this - but I think I botched it the last time I tried. If I upload another version of this image, how do I post it into the nomination? The last time I uploaded an image, it replaced the image nominated. I just want to follow the proper procedure. I have a 4488 x 2988 pixel version I can upload. Sadly, I cannot locate the original .PSD file or the Raw file. --Needsmoreritalin (talk) 02:13, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
Comment Thanks for the question, Needsmoreritalin. If the new image is significantly different from the existing one, then a new version should be uploaded and placed with the headline template Alternative below the first image and all comments of this nomination. For example: File:New version.jpg|480x320px. However, if it is only slightly different and represents a qualitative improvement, you can update the existing photo with a new upload. It is a pity that the original raw is not available. -- Radomianin (talk) 05:40, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

Comment Good luck with WLM, i see Italy started early. Is that date correct, shoted last year ? More important, you could put some Vibrance, colors are a bit dull. --Mile (talk) 08:27, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you Mile, you are very kind. I applied some vibrance, but I'm not sure if you've seen the latest version. In that case I (probably) may have applied too little vibrance... Terragio67 (talk) 11:53, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Comment Great sharpness (I'm in fact counting the days to get a R5 Mark II) in spite of high ISO, but tricky lighting (the subject is underexposed). Why do you add "All right reserved" to your EXIF if you publish with CC BY-SA 4.0? that looks contradictory --Poco a poco (talk) 07:26, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
Comment The photographer may change his mind and release the picture any time later. For us, the Commons license is what finally counts, not the EXIF info. --A.Savin 08:36, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, when I got the Camera I set t he EXIF data like that. But when I upload to Wikipedia I have to release the rights. It remains in the EXIF, but its Creative Commons Share Alike With Attribution now. Needsmoreritalin (talk) 14:01, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, by the way, congrats on getting the R5 Mk II. I hope it brings you much joy! Needsmoreritalin (talk) 17:54, 1 September 2024 (UTC)

Oppose One of those rare photos that looks better when viewed at full resolution with some very nice detail. But overall the lighting situation is just far too distracting; the subject is in deep shadow and the eye is drawn to the bright patches in the background. BigDom (talk) 06:46, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
- Would the image benefit from a tighter crop? The subject was under tree cover and you can see there was a gap in the canopy leading to that bright spot above and to the right of the subject. Needsmoreritalin (talk) 14:39, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
Comment Very detailed at full resolution but at first sight unappealing light (animal and background) -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:28, 2 September 2024 (UTC)

Alternative
[edit]Info Re-cropped (back to 2:3) and made adjustments in Photoshop to bring shadows up by 5 and highlights down by 5, with a neutral density gradient in the upper right to address concerns about the bright spot.

Oppose Agree with the discussion below that the background apparently has been replaced. We could allow the cut-out, but in any case such a substantial edit must (i) be explained and (ii) done in the best possible way – right now there are some rough edges and (at the bottom) some strange pixels which may be remnants of the original background. – Aristeas (talk) 07:40, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- Update: Ah, now we know the background has not been replaced (the strange pixels at the bottom and some rough corners have misled me). So I’m sorry if my comment above was harsh; but I keep the oppose vote for now because the editing is still a bit unfortunate and does not do justice to this great photo. Radomianin’s new version is much better (thank you), I would be happy to support it. – Aristeas (talk) 09:17, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

Comment - @Charlesjsharp: , so you have asked the uploader to respond at 21:17, 4 September 2024 (UTC) and started rallying everyone at 15:49, 5 September 2024 (UTC) ans asked for withdrawal of nomination at 20:54, 5 September 2024, citing that they have not responded, which is less than 24 hours time for them. Isn't it too much to expect from volunteers from global south countries to respond then and there? I hope you understand that, people can have their own real life problems to deal with and not everyone might be in a super privileged position to respond in volunteer capacity on an emergency basis as and when asked. Personally, I don't have any issues if the FP nomination is rejected on technical grounds and if everyone changes the vote from support to reject but rallying and targeting without giving ample time to respond and not assuming good faith towards the editors, who have been contributing to Wikimedia sites in a significant way, can very well be demotivating to many people. Unlike you, I am not pinging anyone, who voted here, without any kind of expectation for them to change their votes or their minds, but I simply hope that everyone can at least assume good faith towards the uploader and provide him sufficient time to respond. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 08:26, 6 September 2024 (UTC)

Oppose Nine years ago, I uploaded a manipulated image to Commons. The reasons don't matter; the fact is that I did wrong, and I will carry this guilt for the rest of my days here on Commons. Unfortunately, there is no turning back once we haven't been honest. The modifications that are obvious to me may not be to others, so it is always important to list all the manipulations made, not only in the upload history to see the changes, but also in the (retouch) template. I deeply regret that this situation happened, and I hope it doesn't happen again in the future. --Wilfredor (talk) 18:46, 6 September 2024 (UTC)

Comment This is great. I waited if someone will put note, saw none yesterday night. Now i checked with original, picture was rotated and scalled-up (yes, up. Not down.) to 6×4 k, and a part was covered (left-bottom corner). I think our community screw up a big. Yesterday night i went with 200-300% to check mistakes, could find'em. - The mistakes are that there's dark green pixels at the bottom of the butterfly that didn't benefit from the exposure + color change. There is also dark pixels at the bottom right of the picture, probably originating from upscaling or sharpening. The dark green pixels at the bottom of the butterfly led some people to think that the original background was cut-out and it turned out it's not true. I think people should have assumed good faith and let time to the author explain because for me there was three possibilities : 1) fake background; 2) mask that was not extended enough to apply color and exposure change (=what happened here); or 3) remains of chromatic aberration -- Giles Laurent (talk) 11:15, 7 September 2024 (UTC)

Comment Thank you all for your valuable opinions. I suggest that if an image seems controversial or raises concerns, we should reach out to the photographer to request the original version before making any adverse comments. It's important not to pass judgment without understanding the full context, as negative feedback can hurt and demotivate photographers. By placing trust in each other’s work and approaching feedback with good faith, we can maintain a positive atmosphere and continue to move forward together.--Atudu (talk) 04:57, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

Info The picture was certainly once a good, outstanding photo in the 2000s, but times change and this is especially true for this photo. Today it wouldn't even be a QI. The resolution is low and yet the image appears blurred. There are various image blurs and image errors and it is also tilted. What annoys me the most is the cropping of the houses at the bottom of the picture - to me it looks arbitrary. (Original nomination)
Delist -- Fonzoyo (talk) 17:24, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
Delist - Excellent for the age, but I don't think it meets current standards. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 18:42, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
Keep It would not be promoted today, but for 2008, sixteen years ago, it is a very standard quality. As the procedure for delisting is manual and long, I can't imagine nominating all the FPs promoted at this period for the reason they are not so good in 2024's. If you sharpen this picture with Topaz AI for example, it would be fine. Acceptable composition and light in my opinion.
- Look at the archives, the picture that was promoted just after this one by chronological order, is File:Lunar Crepuscular Rays 2.jpg, which is much worse, so... good luck to find them all :-) -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:24, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
Keep Unless there’s a better photo with similar features, I would agree to delist it. However, the factor of time also plays a role. Unless we had a time machine to see how the place looked back then, I don’t think anyone can reasonably delist photos like this. --Wilfredor (talk) 03:38, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
Keep Light and composition are fine. The technical quality … well, is solid for the time of its creation. Digital photography – and especially digital cameras and lenses which are in the reach of Commons users – has come a long way since the 2000s. I don’t think we should replace our FPs repeatedly like a snake sheds its skin; let’s sort out the worst which were not great even in their time, and keep the rest which can thus serve also as a vivid history of respectable digital photography. – Aristeas (talk) 13:42, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Oppose Sorry, I'm not seeing the FP potential here. The colours are washed out from the harsh daytime light and there is a lot of noise where the shadows have been raised. The composition doesn't work for me either with the centred subject and abundance of foreground. BigDom (talk) 08:00, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

For example: File:New version.jpg|480x320px. However, if it is only slightly different and represents a qualitative improvement, you can update the existing photo with a new upload. Question I don’t think the second part of the above comment is appropriate. But maybe we can read its first part as a hint that the image would look rather lonely in the “Air transport” gallery. @Yann: and all others: Wouldn’t this image fit better into the “Historical” gallery? We have some similar photo there, e.g. this one. If you agree, we should change the gallery link above to Commons:Featured_pictures/Historical#1940-1949. Info The image shows a street in an informal settlement in Serra da Cantareira, São Paulo. More than just a photograph, it's a window into a reality that is often overlooked. Despite the challenging conditions, with makeshift houses and narrow streets, the photo also captures everyday scenes like children playing, neighbors chatting, and clothes drying in the sun. This image encourages us to observe and understand these realities. All by -- Wilfredor (talk) 12:01, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Comment To make a great photo of an ordinary subject, you need to bring something special inside. Special light, special sky, special composition, or special something. Extraordinary subjects are easier to capture, but also rarer in everyday life -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:12, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

Oppose Good documentation image but midday sun (13:28 according to the exif) coming from left side (according to the orientation of the shadows), creating a dull light. This is not something you can change afterwards. My eyes are caught by the wastes and litter in the water, and look for something more exciting to compensate. Unfortunately the houses are not colorful (like in Manarola for example), and seem quite ordinary with the uniform red of their standard bricks. Slightly blurry foreground (perhaps fixable with AI tools). I think Commons has many photos of this kind, featuring banal architecture and taken in the middle of the day. Perhaps at sunrise, sunset, golden hour, blue hour, or under a special sky, a stormy weather for example, or colorful clouds, the subject would appear more special -- Basile Morin (talk) 03:09, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

- Thanks, Terraglo67, although the photo does not show the reality of extreme poverty, nor the dangers associated with being in this environment, such as the insecurity faced by visitors and residents, taking this photo was not easy. The insecurity in these places is high, and I have already experienced being threatened with a gun in a favela. On this occasion, thank God, it didn’t happen, but it was a quick shot: I saw the place, had a few minutes, took the photo, and left calmly. Unlike photographing a tourist destination or a European landscape, this image carries a complex background full of social, economic, and personal factors that make it much more than just a simple capture. Support Agree with Basile’s statements, but the subject (a slum) relativizes our criticism; e.g., waste and litter in the water (which are normally a deficit) are an integral part of this photo. And Rhododendrites is right that the composition makes the photo special. – Aristeas (talk) 08:40, 6 September 2024 (UTC)

- If you look at my recent uploads, I uploaded several of this bird without all the space. But we so rarely get context/habitat in the photos we promote because, in part, we're concerned with subject detail. So here is a panorama to show subject detail *and* extra space to show habitat. Whether that's appealing to enough people, we'll see, but that's the idea. — Rhododendrites talk | 16:35, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

Info This sailing boat is a transport lugger that is part of the floating section of the Maritime Museum of Cesenatico. Built in 1936 by the Rondolini shipyard of Cattolica, it is twentyone meters long and seven meters wide, it could carry one hundred and forty tons of goods. The advent of motor boats in the 1930s-40s led to the disappearance of the transport lugger as a merchant vessel. Nowadays, it can be visited by making a reservation at the Museum which is located 20 meters from the boat. All by Terragio67 -- Terragio67 (talk) 05:40, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

Comment Interesting subject and I like the shallow-ish depth of field that allows us to see the details of the chandelier without being distracted by details in the background. That said, I do think there is a little too much background here that could be cropped. Overall, this is pretty good for a smartphone image and not a million miles away from FP standard. - @PetarM: Yes, but the man doesn't bring anything. In fact, seeing that he is very dark and more than half hidden, removing him entirely makes sense. So I removed the shoe, and the disturbing light, at the upper right. Yann (talk) 19:21, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

Oppose Sorry, I completely understand the urge to remove the cropped shoe and lamp (and I would do so if this was my own photo), but this is a historic(al) and even iconic photo, therefore I think we should not make any substantial edits to it and I must oppose the edited version. – Aristeas (talk) 15:07, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

I think there is too much lake, the composition would have been better if it was centered on the house with the animals and only a small portion of the river. --Wilfredor (talk) 23:03, 11 September 2024 (UTC)

Support A stunning place. The author wanted to show the beautiful galleries with their innummerable books, the chandelier, and the glass dome — all in a single photo. This is much and has led to an unusal, somewhat forced perspective which unavoidably causes significant distortions; personally I may have preferred separate photos of the various elements; but I must also admit that the result is exciting and impressive, and the difficult contrast between very dark and very bright elements has been handled successfully, so IMHO the photo deserves the star. Wilfredor has carefully reduced the noise and improved the sharpness, thanks for that. – Aristeas (talk) 10:13, 13 September 2024 (UTC)

Oppose sorry, the second bird isn't sharp and not in focus Ezarateesteban 22:15, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
Support I agree – worst case be the second bird can be cropped. --SHB2000 (talk) 04:07, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
Comment Some px on both side would be helpfull, especially on right side since that bird is in focus. --Mile (talk) 08:05, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
Neutral Agree with Mile. And definitely don't crop -- the photo is about a confrontation. Regarding sharpness of the egret, it is in a middle-ground area where it would be better for it to be blurrier or sharper, but I enjoy the drama of the heron's pose. All-in-all that brings me to neutral. :) — Rhododendrites talk | 12:48, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

Support The main subject is the heron so I have no problem with the egret beeing out of focus. Also I think that the egret adds to the scene because it's looking at the heron -- Giles Laurent (talk) 15:53, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

Support, but technically not perfect due to strange camera settings. Did you use a tripod?!--Uoaei1 (talk) 11:33, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Inside the basilica it is forbidden to use the tripod. Yes, you're right, camera settings chosen are not ideal. I tried to perform the only possible parameters with the Canon lens available to me for photography, trying to keep my hand still and photographing several photos. The bright parts (enlightened by the two windows at the top) are very beautiful, however the ones in the shade are not perfect, which fortunately are at the edges of the photo... To conclude, the good thing is that the mosaic tiles which measure between 1⁄2 and 1 inch square, can almost all be seen quite well, because I positioned myself at an appropriate distance in the center of the basilica, 30 meters from the apse mosaic, also considering the height of the ceiling which is 30 metres too. Terragio67 (talk) 16:22, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Uoaei1 thanks for your support, when I am allowed to use a tripod, I will try a new composition.
I withdraw my nomination Terragio67 (talk) 00:17, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
