Les temples troglodytiques de Badami surplombent ce bassin artificiel (datant du Vème siècle), bordé de constructions, de temples de diverses époques, d'une mosquée. Badami fut la capitale de l'empire des Chalukya de 540 à 757. Après leur chute, la ville a changé plusieurs fois de mains mais n'a jamais retrouvé sa magnificence. A l'époque Chalukya, les sculpteurs et artisans ont créé les temples troglodytiques, que l'on peut aujourd'hui visiter, et qui ont donné naissance aux temples dravidiens construits en pierre.
