4. Bouddha géant de la Corée (VIIe siècle). Les Chinois connurent sans doute la maîtrise de l'art sculptural bien avant le sixième siècle avant J.-C., mais, à part les statues monumentales des mausolées de Nankin et de Pékin, la plupart des vestiges ont disparu. C'est qu'à plusieurs époques, des dynasties nouvelles avaient ordonné la destruction de tous les monuments rappelant le passé (et incendié les livres). Les plus anciens bas-reliefs sont ceux du palais de Hiao-tang-chan dans le Chan-toung. L'arrivée du Bouddhisme avait beaucoup influencé l'inspiration des artistes chinois et, dès le second siècle après J.-C., les statues de Bouddha sortaient des ateliers des sculpteurs. Les grandes statues, taillées dans le roc, qu'on trouve encore à Hang-tchéou, à Sin-Tchang et en Corée, datent du VIIe - VIIIe siècle. Sous la dynastie des Ming, la sculpture prit une direction profane, représentant des animaux, de forme normale ou fantastique. Les œuvres de cette période sont les meilleures. |
