Dīpavaṃsa (Pali, lit. "Chronicle of the Island"), is the oldest surviving historical record of Sri Lanka. "The bulk of the work concerns the history of Theravada Buddhism in Sri Lanka."[1] According to The Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism, the Dipavamsa provided the "basic contents and outline for the later Mahāvaṃsa."[1]
The Dipavamsa is believed to be compiled from earlier sources around the 3-4th century. It contains the earliest Pali accounts of the Indian emporer Ashoka, who was a great patron of Buddhism.

The Dipavamsa was translated into English by Hermann Oldenberg in 1879:
