pudgala (P. puggala; T. gang zag གང་ཟག་; C. ren/buteqieluo) is translated as "person," etc.

In contrast to the concept of perduring, autonomous self (atman), the the term pudgala is used to refer to a conventional "self" that is associated with the five aggregates.

Pudgala generally refers an ordinary person, using the conventional meaning of the term "person."

This is contrasted with the "worthy ones" (arya pudgala), who are those who have reached a high level of realization.
