Vaiśālī

Vaiśālī (P. Vesāli; T. yangs pa can ཡངས་པ་ཅན་; C. pisheli 毘舍離) is a town in present-day Bihar, India, that was the capital of the Licchavi Republic during the lifetime of Gautama Buddha. The Buddha first visited the city about five years after his enlightenment, and gave a number of important teachings there. The wealthy courtesan Āmrapālī became his disciple and she donated a mango grove called Amrapalivana.

Vaiśālī was also the site of the Second Buddhist council, which was held about one hundred years of the Buddha's parinirvana.
