Vajirā was a Buddhist nun whose story is told in the Vajirāsutta of the Pali Canon. In this sutta, Vajirā is confronted by the demon Mara while meditating. In an attempt to distract Vajirā from her meditation, Mara asks her about the origin and creator of her "self" (atman). She responded by comparing the atman to a chariot, showing that it had no permanent existence but was made up of constituent parts.
This "simile of the chariot" became an important example in describing the concept of not-self (anātman).
