CHAKRA PSYCHOLOGY

THE KUNDALINI SERPENT
and 
THE STAFF OF THE PRIEST

Interestingly enough, we can see a very strong similarity between the staff of the Priests and the shape of the Kundalini Serpent's ascent up through the chakras. Take a look at the following image from "Kundalini Yoga" (by Sri Swami Sivananda). I have highlighted the shape in red on the righthand diagram. You can easily see the similarities with the picture of the priest holding the staff and lamp. His left hand is holding the staff at the level of the heart chakra, and in his right hand he holds a lamp, also at the level of the heart chakra.

The whole story of the Ascent of the Kundalini Serpent is concerned with consciousness's liberation from the belief that it is a matter bound individual - ie: that it is The Mind.

When the kundalini serpent (meaning the individual's awareness) reaches the crown chakra (when the individual realizes that their true identity is the immortal and eternal Self) then there is enlightenment. None of these states needs to be created by the individual because they are already present. The ascent of the kundalini serpent is a metaphor for the spiritual realisations of the individual that culminate in enlightenment.

As the Buddha said "I have attained nothing from this enlightement, it is what I have lost that counts." He had lost the ignorance of the body/mind identification. He had realised the crown chakra and was thus coronated in Self-Realisation. "Not the body, not the Mind, Immortal Self am I." The word Buddha or Christ is a label for this realisation, meaning "awakened one."

Once this ignorance has been shed by the process of Sadhana (spiritual enquiry and progressive realisations) then their is no fear of The Mind (relative diversity and variety) and it's Play. One realises the immortal and eternal Self which is behind all appearances of duality - living and dieing.
