Globalisation: Competition or Co-operation?
Globalisation was one of the main items on the agenda of the International Network of Engineers and Scientists Millennium conference, INES 2000, in Stockholm.
Susan George, author of The Lugano Report and How the Other Half Dies, said the problem is actually the doctrine of competitiveness , which is driving the economy and pitting us against one another. "The way out is co-operation not competition", she told a packed auditorium. Cohn Hines, author of Locahisation: a Global Manifesto, said the answer is locahisation and maximum self- reliance. "
The global commandment that every nation must contort its economy to out-compete every other country is an economic, social and environmental nonsense", he said. The Network called on scientists and engineers everywhere to exercise personal responsibility based on individual conscience as a key to their work in the 21st century.
Their final declaration states: "Scientists and engineers have a responsibility to society to assure that science and its products are not misused or allowed to serve destructive ends."
