Chötrul Düchen (T. ཆོས་འཕྲུལ་དུས་ཆེན་), also known as Chonga Choepa (བཅོ་ལྔ་མཆོད་པ་) or the Butter Lamp Festival, is one of the four major holidays that commemorate four events in the life of the Buddha, according to the Tibetan tradition. Chötrul Düchen takes place on the fifteenth day of the first month in the Tibetan calendar during the full moon. The first fifteen days of the year celebrate the fifteen days during which the historical Buddha displayed miracles for his disciples, in order to increase their devotion.[1]
The Tibeten term Chotrul Duchen (T. ཆོས་འཕྲུལ་དུས་ཆེན་) can be translated as "Great Day of Miraculous Manifestations". To commemorate the occasion, it is customary to light many "butter lamps."
