Dakini (Skt. ḍākinī; Tib. མཁའ་འགྲོ་མ་, khandroma; Wyl. mkha' 'gro ma) — a female embodiment of enlightened energy.
The Tibetan term ‘Khandro’ (མཁའ་འགྲོ་) literally means ‘sky-goer’, indicating one who traverses the 'sky' of the expanse of wisdom.[1]
The masculine form of the word is ḍāka, which is usually translated into Tibetan as pawo "hero" (Wylie: dpa' bo).[2]
The archetypal ḍākinī in Tibetan Buddhism is Yeshe Tsogyal, consort of Padmasambhava.[2]
The dakini also appears in Japanese Shingon Buddhism.
