Dharma name

A Dharma name is a name bestowed by a teacher or preceptor during initiation ceremonies such as a monastic ordination or the taking of refuge vows in the Sanskrit Mahayana tradition.

Some Buddhist teachers are known to have had many different Dharma names in the course of their careers. For example, the Japanese teacher Shinran also had the following other names: Matsukawa Maru, Hanen, Shaku, Zenshin, Gotoku Shinran and Kenshin Daeshi.
