A Dharma name is a name bestowed by a teacher or preceptor during initiation ceremonies such as a monastic ordination or the taking of refuge vows in the Sanskrit Mahayana tradition.[1]

Some Buddhist teachers are known to have had many different Dharma names in the course of their careers. For example, the Japanese teacher Shinran also had the following other names: Matsukawa Maru, Hanen, Shaku, Zenshin, Gotoku Shinran and Kenshin Daeshi.[2]
