Dunhuang is a town in northwest China on the edge of the Taklamakan Desert in Central Asia. It was first established during the Han dynasty and became an important stop on the ancient silk road.[1] Today the town is in China's Gansu province.[1]
The destination of Dunhuang is often used to refer to the nearby complex of Buddhist caves, including the Mogao Caves and the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas (Quianfo Dang).[1] The name is also used to refer to the manuscripts that have been discovered in these caves, known as the Dunhuang manuscripts.
