Eight qualities of a buddha — according to Maitreya's Uttaratantra Shastra, all of the qualities of a buddha can be condensed into the two-fold benefit of self and others, which are further subdivided into eight qualities (T. don gnyis kyi yon tan brgyad དོན་གཉིས་ཀྱི་ཡོན་ཏན་བརྒྱད་):

Benefit of self:

  • 1) self aware (pratyātma-vedya; T. so so rang rig[1])
  • 2) unconditioned (asaṃskṛta; T. dus ma byas) body
  • 3) spontaneously present (anābhoga/nirābhoga; T. lhun grub[2])

Benefit of others:

And

  • 7) the benefit of self (Skt. svārtha; T. rang don), and
  • 8) the benefit of others (Skt. parārtha; T. gzhan don).
