Five tarka schools

Five tarka schools (Skt. pañcatarkavargāḥ; T. རྟོག་གེ་སྡེ་ལྔ་), or five sophist schools.[1] A grouping of non-Buddhist schools. It is said that all the non-Buddhist views can be condensed into these five schools.[2]

According to Longchenpa, the five schools are:[2]

  1. Samkhya
  2. Vaisheshika
  3. Mimamsaka
  4. Jain
  5. Charvaka or Brihaspati (Skt. Bṛhaspati; Tib. ཕུར་བུ་པ་, Wyl. phur bu pa)

An alternative list includes:[1]

  1. grangs can pa (Samkhya);
  2. dbang phyug pa (Aishvara);
  3. rgyal ba pa (Jaina);
  4. khyab 'jug pa (Vaishnava);
  5. chad pa'i lta ba (Nihilists)
