The om mani padme hum mantra in Tibetan script.

Om mani padme hum (Skt. oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ; T. oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ ཨོམ་མ་ནི་པད་མེ་ཧུང་; C. an mani bami hong 唵嘛呢叭彌吽) is the most famous of all the Buddhist mantras, and is especially important in Tibetan Buddhism.[1]

It is the mantra of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.[1]

The first known appearance of the mantra is in the Kāraṇḍavyūha, a Mahayana sutra believed to have been composed in Kashmir circa the late fourth or early fifth century CE.[1]
