pariṣad (P. parisā; T. ’khor; C. zhonghui 衆會) is translated as “followers,” “assembly,” “congregation,” etc.[1] This is a general term for the followers of the Buddha, that includes lay followers as well as monastics.[1][2]
The followers (pariṣad) of the buddha are said to consist of four groups:[1][2]
By contrast, the term sangha is traditionally used to refer exclusively to either:
- monastics (monks and nuns), or
- noble ones (the arya sangha, composed of both lay and monastic realized beings)
The Tibetan translation of this term (T. ’khor) can refer more generally to a "retinue," "entourage," "court," "attendants," etc.[3]
