prāṇa (T. srog སྲོག་; C. bona 波那) is translated as "life-force", "vital force," "wind," "breath," etc.
Prāṇa can have the following meanings:
- 1. According to Vinaya and the Abhidharma tradition it is the vital energy that acts as the basis for consciousness and the warmth of a being; whereas in other traditions it is generally the life as opposed to death.[1]
- 2. In astrology, it is the life-pattern of a person.[1]
- 3. The life force present in all beings. Often this life force is associated with the breath.[1]
- 4. In Buddhist tantra and in Tibetan medicine, prāṇa refers the "inner winds" that move through the channels (nādī) of the subtle body. (See "inner winds".)
