prayojana (T. dogs pa) is translated as "pupose," "aim," "intention," "necessity," etc.[1]
This term one of the sixteen categories of the Nyaya school; in this context prayojana refers to the "purpose" that one has in mind for engaging in a debate.[2]
According to the Vyākhyāyukti, prayojana is one of the five points to be used in the explanation of a sutra.[3]
