Pūrvaśaila. (P. Pubbaseliya; T. Shar gyi ri bo; C. Dongshan 東山) An early Buddhist school that is an offshoot of the Mahāsāṃghika school.[1] This school is particularly associated with the Caitika sect.[1]
The name of the school ("Eastern Hill") is believed to derive from the location of its chief monastary (vihara), on a hill to the east of the city of Dhānyakaṭaka.[1]
Like other branches of the Mahāsāṃghika, they held that the enlightenment of a buddha was superior to that of an arhat.[1]
