Sūtrasamuccaya (T. mdo kun las btus pa མདོ་ཀུན་ལས་བཏུས་པ་; C. Dasheng baoyaoyi lun 大乘寶要義論), or Compendium of Sutras, is a text attributed to Nagarjuna that consists of passages from sixty-eight mainly Mahayana sutras. The selected passages extol the Mahayana path.[1] This text is notable because it provides scholars with evidence of the Mahayana sutras that were extant during the time of Nagarjuna.[1]
According to Alex Wayman (1997: p. 86), it is unlikely that the Sūtrasamuccaya was composed by Nāgārjuna. Wayman states:
- ...as the Lankavatāra-sutra is cited several times, and the Mādhyamika Nāgārjuna surely precedes this scripture, it is highly unlikely that this Sūtrasamuccaya is by Nāgārjuna. The fourth century AD is the earliest possible period for such a compendium.[2]
The following Mahāyāna Sūtras are quoted in the Sūtrasamuccaya:[3]
