In Mahāyāna Buddhism, the word vyūha is sometimes translated as "arrangement", in the sense of marvelous, supernatural, magical arrangements, or supernatural manifestations.[2]
The term is also found among the titles of some texts, such as Longer Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra and the Shorter Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra. The Sakya Pandita Translation Group translates Sukhāvatīvyūha as "The Display of Sukhāvatī." They state:
- The term vyūha (Tib. bkod pa) means “display,” indicating that the sūtra is to a large extent a description of this buddha realm [Sukhāvatī] and its characteristics.[3]
Similarly, Peter Alan Roberts translates the title Kāraṇḍavyūha as "The Basket’s Display."[4]
Vyūhā can also refer to:
- a buddhafield inhabited by the Buddha Sarvābhijñāmatirāja (translated as "ornamented")[5]
- The name of an eon (kalpa).[5]
This term is also extant in the Pali language, where it means "an array" or "grouping of troops."[6]
