GURU AND DISCIPLE - CHAPTER 1

The term "Guru" seems to be very much misunderstood and sometimes misused in this country. The literal meaning of Guru is "teacher." But normally the word is used for a spiritual teacher, one who helps you in realizing your own Spirit by removing the ignorance which veils it. The word "Guru" is made up of two syllables — "gu" and "ru." "Gu" means the darkness of ignorance, "ru," the one who dispels. So the one who dispels your ignorance is "Guru." In our ordinary life, if somebody teaches you a little bit of cooking, he or she is your guru; a little of your ignorance regarding cooking is removed. But our spiritual Guru is the one who removes the basic ignorance, the ignorance of the true Self.

Sometimes I say, "Knowing no thing brings nothing, knowing everything brings something, but knowing the Knower brings everything." It may sound a little tricky but if you think about it for a moment you will probably get it. Knowing no thing brings nothing - that part is obvious. Knowing everything brings something - something is better than nothing, no doubt. But know the Knower and you will get everything. As the Bible says, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of Heaven; everything else will be added unto thee." In other words you don't have to grab the knowledge of things one by one. Just grasp the main root and you will get the whole tree. What is the cause of all our many doubts, fears, anxieties and little ignorances? The basic ignorance of our own Self. Know the Self and you will know what is to be known. So the one who helps you in removing that self-ignorance is called the Guru.
