GURU AND DISCIPLE

Throughout the history of mankind there have always been human beings who felt there must be more to life than what is offered by the physical, emotional, intellectual and socio-political realms alone. Therefore they sought a higher wisdom or spiritual enlightenment. Many have found themselves in need of someone who has traveled the spiritual path successfully and could guide them toward the understanding they sought.

Thus has the Guru and disciple (or spiritual teacher and student) relationship found a place in nearly every spiritual tradition in the world. There have been enlightened teachers or Gurus since the very dawn of time: Hasidic Rabbis of Judaism, Sufi Masters of Islam, Lord Jesus and the long line of mystics and saints in the Christian tradition, Lord Buddha and all the succeeding Masters and Roshis in Buddhism - these are all examples of this august and still living tradition.

Many Gurus pass almost unnoticed and unknown to all but perhaps a few disciples who recognize their greatness; others are world famous. But the distinguishing mark of a Guru is, as Sri Swamiji says, "complete mastery over his or her body and mind, purity of heart, and total freedom from the bondage of the senses." This book describes the Guru, how you can recognize him, his function in the spiritual seeker's life, and - most important - the qualities needed for a disciple to benefit from the guidance of a Guru.

Although the author is considered by hundreds of thousands of seekers and devotees throughout the world as their beloved and revered Gurudev, it may be noted that he never refers to himself as a Guru. With the true catholicism of a genuinely spiritual person, he does not limit the Guru either to any one person or any one tradition. In fact, ultimately he says, "The Guru is the inner Light or Spirit or consciousness within each person."

We hope this small book proves inspiring and instructive, not only to disciples of Sri Swamiji, but also to students of other Masters, to those who have yet to discover their own Master, and to all spiritual seekers everywhere.
