GURU AND DISCIPLE - CHAPTER 9

Sure you can. But what we call mantra initiation is not just giving you a mantra or telling you what to repeat. The person who gives you initiation will impart a little of that mantra vibration into you. It's like putting a drop of yogurt culture into a big pot of milk, the milk becomes solidified quickly. Without that culture it might take more time for the milk to ferment and curdle by itself. And probably then it will be a little sour too!

So it is to get that drop of beautiful culture that you take initiation from a Guru. But you don't need to wait for that. You can just repeat any mantram, there's nothing wrong with it. Nobody would say, "Without a Guru you can not practice anything." Actually your own mind can act as a Guru. You can get guidance from within. It's only if you can't get that inner guidance that you seek guidance from outside. Ultimately, you are the Guru. Why do I say this? Because if your mind is not going to be your Guru, you won't even be able to recognize a Guru outside. It is your mind that tells you, "Oh, so-and-so seems to be a nice guide, follow him." You listen to your mind first and then follow a person according to that mind's instruction. If the mind says, "Oh, there are so many fakes running around, why worry about all those people?" you have to follow that mind as your Guru. You won't be able to see any Guru outside then. So a good mind will guide you to a good person.
