THE MASKED SELF
This painful problem with self expression - one of the functions of the throat chakra - is often caused by childhood traumas when the Masked Self personality was created in the "Seen and not heard" type of family and social environment. The person is made to feel that their feelings and opinions are not important, are in fact worthless, and that they should not even attempt to express, think, feel, or act for themselves. They may have been the victim of interactions with unhealthy competitive types, especially within narcissistic egotistical family situations.
This condition can physically manifest as tension, tightness, and a constricted feeling in the throat and shoulders.
In order to cope with this horrendous rejection and devastating worthlessness, the individual buries their true self behind the "acceptable and encouraged social mask". This Masked Self adds further to the production of a false personality. The sad child remains locked in an adult form, choosing to neglect responsibility for their own growth and life experience and allowing others (partner, employer, and other people who appear to them as authoritative figures) to take charge of their life.
If asked how they feel, the masked self will often reply "Fine" or "I don't know" or "It doesn't matter". They have been told to "put up and shut up" and to just "get on with life".
The Masked Self archetype is incapable of openly and honestly expressing themselves. They may be unable to discuss or argue a point of view. They may be unable to assert themselves and always be saying "Yes" even when they want to say "no". Anger and frustration build up as the masked self syndrome dominates their lives and this frustration only goes to further block the throat chakra, as the individual cannot even express the pain effectively or substantially.
The Masked Self feels that they do not have a right to be here and interact with others. They may emit an uncomfortable silence and avoid any truthful and relevant expression. The subject matter that they do communicate is generally quite academic, often irrelevant, and lacks any enthusiasm, or they may appear as a clown; someone who is always laughing, making jokes, and taking an unrealistic view of all situations. In reality they are putting on the mask of comedy (the tears of a clown) in an attempt to hide the tragedy of feeling that no-one loves or will listen to them - because they feel that they have no real importance in life. Real importance as opposed to the self-inflated inappropriate importance of the egotist, who is themselves suffering this masked self archetype.
These problems in effective communication are the product of their upbringing and subsequent social conditions. The masked self can be discarded by understanding and healing the Vishuddha (throat) Chakra.
