Life follows the law of "As within, so without." If we fail to nurture these positive, sattvic, and life-enhancing qualities on the inside, then how do we expect them to manifest in our lives? We cannot be dependent upon others to supply us with our inner self - we need to do this ourselves - and this is work well worth doing.
It is very destructive to maintain an unnecessarily negative and unkind relationship with ourselves, sadly this seems to be a problem that many people suffer from - and it is not necessary to be stuck with this problem. We can overcome this neurotic (irrational) self-dislike and this is one of the first steps in any course of self-development.
