araññavāsi (Pali), literally "forest-dweller," refers to a tradition of forest-dwelling monks as contrasted with "town-dwellers" (gāmavāsi) within the Pali tradition.[1] In this context:[1]
- the forest-dwellers live in relative isolation in the forests and are primarily dedicated to meditation training, and
- the town-dwellers live in towns or urban monasteries, and are more focused on doctrinal study and teaching.
