gāmavāsi (Pali), literally "town-dweller," refers to a tradition of town-dwelling monks as contrasted with "forest-dwellers" (araññavāsi) within the Pali tradition.[1] In this context:[1]
- the town-dwellers live in towns or urban monasteries, and are more focused on doctrinal study and teaching, and
- the forest-dwellers live in relative isolation in the forests and are primarily dedicated to meditation training.
