śrotrendriya (P. sotindriya; T. rna ba’i dbang po རྣ་བའི་དབང་པོ་; C. ergen 耳根), or ear faculty, is one of the five sense faculties, which are inner subtle forms based on the physical sense organs.[1]
The "ear faculty" (śrotrendriya) functions as:
- the ear base (śrotra-āyatana) in the scheme of the twelve ayatanas[2]
- the ear dhatu (śrotra-dhatu) within the eighteen dhatus
The "ear faculty" is also referred to as:
- the ear-sensitivity (sota-pasāda) in the Pali Abhidharma tradition[3]
Description
The ear faculty is a translucent form (rūpaprasāda) that is the basis for the ear consciousness.
The Khenjuk states:
- The [shape of the] the ear faculty is similar to [the shape of] a twisted roll of birch bark.[1]
