ghrāṇendriya (P. ghāṇindriya; T. sna’i dbang po སྣའི་དབང་པོ་; C. bigen 鼻根), or nose faculty, is one of the five sense faculties, which are inner subtle forms based on the physical sense organs.[1]
The "nose faculty" (ghrāṇendriya) functions as:
- the nose base (ghrāṇa-āyatana) in the scheme of the twelve ayatanas.[2]
- the nose dhatu (ghrāṇa-dhatu) within the eighteen dhatus
The "nose faculty" is also referred to as:
- the nose-sensitivity (ghāna-pasāda) in the Pali Abhidharma tradition[3]
Description
The nose faculty is a translucent form (rūpaprasāda) that is the basis for the nose consciousness.
The Khenjuk states:
- The [shape of the] the nose faculty is similar to [the shape of] parallel copper needles.[1]
