The name Upāliparipṛcchā (Upali's Questions) can refer to the following texts:[1]
- a text from the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya that is found in the Vinayottaragrantha (Toh 7 and Toh 7a) of the Tibetan Kangyur.
- a translation of the Upāliparipṛcchā from the Sarvāstivāda Vinaya that is found in the Chinese canon
- Determining the Vinaya: Upāli’s Questions (Vinayaviniścayopāliparipṛcchā), a Mahayana sutra from the Ratnakuta collection that focuses on the conduct of a bodhisattva
For context, the Achi Translation Group states:
- Many conversations about the Vinaya between the Buddha and Upāli are recorded in the various Vinaya collections, and, according to early Buddhist texts, Upāli was often consulted by others about matters of monastic discipline, even during the Buddha’s lifetime. Following the Buddha’s passing, Upāli was chosen to recite the Vinaya at the First Buddhist Council.[2]
