Fathers of the Desert was first published in English in 1867. The book describes the beliefs, lives and practices of a number of individual desert fathers and groups like the Anchorites. It also goes into details about the general spiritual life in the first six centuries in the Middle East. Fathers of the Desert is despite the old English easy to read and the description of their whereabouts is entertaining and often dramatized. For a more precise and historical correct work on the desert fathers and how they shaped The Holy Bible as we know it, I would suggest The Ante Nicene Fathers. Download Fathers of the Desert here:
Fathers of the Desert VOL I
Fathers of the Desert VOL II
They do. Please download to your harddrive and then open, instead of opening in browser.
Still not working.
Hi Don, I think the problem is that the pdf-files are so huge. VOL 1 is 17 MB and the pages are scanned rather than text-format. This is too much to handle for most build in pdf-readers in browsers. I suggest you try to right click the link and choose “save as”. Then save the file on you desktop and open it with you pdf-reader.
Good luck

Hi, I’m able to open and browse Philokalia, but when I try to open and read the FATHERS OF THE DESERT VOL I+II neither is successful. I brings up the first page only and II never makes it past loading.
Would you fix whatever is preventing these from reading or downloading.
Thanks, Don
