The Flavour of Dhamma by Acharn Thate Desaransi. Thanks to Steven Towler, who pointed me in direction of this book. Acharn Thate Desaransi was a revered Thai Forest Tradition master and meditation teacher who played a significant role in reviving the practice of meditation in Thailand during the 20th century. He was born in 1902 in Thailand and ordained as a monk at the age of 20. Acharn Thate spent much of his monastic life living in remote forest monasteries, following the ascetic practices of the Forest Tradition.
Acharn Thate’s teachings were deeply rooted in the Buddhist scriptures and emphasized the practice of meditation as the means to cultivate wisdom and insight. He taught that the ultimate goal of meditation was to develop a clear and direct understanding of the nature of reality, free from the distortions of the mind.
Acharn Thate was known for his skillful guidance in meditation, particularly in the practice of breath meditation (anapanasati). He emphasized the importance of cultivating mindfulness and concentration as the foundation for developing insight into the nature of the mind and body.
In addition to his teachings on meditation, Acharn Thate also emphasized the practice of ethical conduct (sila) as an essential component of spiritual practice. He taught that ethical conduct provided a foundation for developing the mental qualities necessary for deepening one’s meditation practice and gaining insight into the nature of reality.
Acharn Thate’s teachings were influential in the development of the Thai Forest Tradition of Buddhism, which emphasizes the practice of meditation and the cultivation of wisdom as the means to liberation. His legacy continues to inspire practitioners around the world to deepen their understanding of the Buddha’s teachings and to cultivate wisdom and compassion in their lives.
