All the students experienced
Psychic Vision as they Powered Up their Energy Bodies through connection with
the chakras in the Center of the Earth and in the Center of the Universe. All of
them saw their psychic bodies and the Energy Blockages which inhabited them.
Every student had the experience of removing said Energy Blockages - removing
and discharging their Negative Karmic Mass and integrating the purified remains
with the Soul Chakra, coating the Higher Being Bodies and creating the Body
Kesdjian.
Older Students had the experience of
working with the Ego. All students reading this missive are the Outpatients.
Those who come are the Inpatients for the Operation of the Egodectomy!!
As we charcterise our Sub-Persdonalities
of the Ego - it is that vast Mass of Energy Blockages which comprise the Selfish
Competitive Ego - so we can ground even the deepest blockage, purify our
Egoistic Self Destructors who rule our madness from Lifetime to Lifetime, create
the Vajra Diamond Body (EE LEVEL 5) which alone can survive the Death process as an Ascended
Master..

"I am now in the last week of the course and I feel like a
totally different person. I have regained myself and have been given from
nothing having no psychic vision at all at the start of the energy enhancement
course, a clarity of psychic
vision that is breathtaking."
"As we practiced on each other we
came very quickly to realise this. I could literally feel the energy moving
inside each chakra as the other person worked within me from several meters away
and when I worked on the other person I could see me projecting energy to them
and could see where the blockages were within their chakras.
I could force the energy from my
centres into their centres and clean their centre bringing the energy full
circle back to me. You could tell the state of their chakras by the amount of
energy returning to your own centre and this was achieved by mind power only.
Before I came here Satchi said he
would teach me to do it in this way and I was sceptical about this claim. I
could never envision me having psychic vision, but I have now, I can now do
astonishingly powerful Reiki sessions on people without going any where near
them and distance healing over any distance is a piece of cake, incredible
stuff."
"I am totally de-stressed and have expanded in every
way. I feel stronger and fitter and much more mentally agile than I have ever
felt in my life. The fog and confusion of life has gone and I feel that I have
just received the inside information on everything.
I am ready for anything and
am wide awake. I am full of the most incredible energy imaginable and have
Energy Enhancement Reiki
that is so powerful it staggers me. I know a thing or two about Reiki and had a
very strong Reiki connection before I got here, now I have a connection that is
beyond description and I have yet to undergo the second initiation this week and
then the masters. I have opted to take this as an extra and for anyone who is
interested, I believe this is beyond anything you will ever experienced
anywhere."
I am now equipped with life tools and healing tools that one
only dreams of and there is nothing out there in the world that will ever faze
me again. I am absolutely delighted that I decided to come here, because this
experience has changed me, for the good of me and for all those that I will
touch when I leave here. I am so excited and can’t wait to start exploring my
new found talents" - DON 2008

THOMAS BLAIR'S REPORT FROM THE ASHRAM OF SATHYA
SAI BABA JULY 9TH 2010
I have been to see Satchi & Devi almost once a
year since 2005, and I have to say, that I have never been let down. Every time
they greet me at the airport I am received in an atmosphere of great warmth,
positivity and generosity, into which I soon relax and know that it’s safe to be
me with all my “luggage”. In June 2010 I recently went on a 6 week course they
were holding in India.
In the weeks I spent with them it was clear that
the blockages I was removing with their help, were increasing the amount of
energy flowing through me during meditation. I have never been one to naturally
take to meditating, but with these new experiences of Samadhi (sam – with, adhi
– the light), it was certainly making it possible for me to sit for much longer
periods.
I must concede, that on more than one occasion I
started to object and complain about what we were doing, and the methods
employed to transmute the blockages in my being. Satchi & Devi would patiently
wait for me to see that the person complaining was not the real me, it was not
the soul infused personality that I really am, but rather the voice of the
blockages that did not want to go. There are different types of blockages, and
of course, the easy ones are the first to go, but I was now experiencing some
really tough ones. They can certainly be very cunning these blockages, and its
thanks to the experience and energy of Satchi & Devi that I was able to continue
on my way to overcome some really strong blockages.
My experiences of Samadhi: The first time I
experienced anything other than a calm mind in meditation was actually the very
first course I attended with Satchi & Devi in Spain. The experience of energy
surging through my body was first felt in my 1st and 2nd chakras. It was like
having champagne bubbling away in my lower abdomen. Before I talk about my
experience here in India, I think it would be useful to describe briefly and
partly a technique used to commence the flow of energy and so the entry into
Samadhi. It’s to do with using the mind to visualise chakras above the head and
below the base chakra to infinity. For me, the concept of infinity and trying to
imagine this distance above my head, kind of triggered a bypass switch in my
mind, and all of a sudden my mind was quite literally replaced by a surge of
electricity and light – Samadhi.
"If the Map is Correct, Experiences Follow" - Satchidanand
This time here in India I was experiencing
different levels of Samadhi. During meditation I notice the attainment of a
constant flow of energy through my being which gets more and more intense, and
rises further and further up my body, the higher I go up the chakras above my
head to an inconceivably bright and intense sun. Quite often my breathing slows
or even stops a while at the head of an in-breath as my head feels infused with
light. My body feels like it is being purified, and in fact it is, as light is
being shone through me. I always finish the meditation feeling more positive
about my life and the world around me and a feeling that really everything is
ok.
Over and above this, I receive what I would
describe as bolts of light lasting between 2-5 seconds.
During these brief moments, I am no longer a body
with senses or even a sense of weighing or being anything, and am unable to
think.
"In the Buddhafield we find we can Move On More Quickly!" -
Satchidanand
It’s my experience that the body is like a
resistor in an electronic circuit. The more blockages we have, the greater the
resistance to the light. By removing a significant number of blockages, I have
reduced the resistance of my gross and subtle body, and am now able to sit in
Samadhi with ease. And of course, the more light I can sit in, the more
blockages I can remove - now that’s what I call spiritual progress! -
Thomas Blair July 2010
NOW OUR STUDENT HAS PSYCHIC VISION!!
"Of course, since then my
student had spent a day or two clearing out his Antahkarana which is the first
thing we always do in Level 2 of Energy Enhancement. This opens the channels to
the higher chakras and enables vast amounts of energy to power the physical,
emotional, mental, spiritual and psychic bodies."
NOW HE CAN SEE!!
ENERGY ENHANCEMENT RULES!!
"So we sat together and Devi
Dhyani and I helped and at the end of the meditation the Blockage was gone and
its spare parts were coating the Higher Being Bodies of our Student, "Pain Gone!
Blockage Gone!!"
There were more blockages like
this as we proceeded further on the course, one was found in the middle of a
Reiki Mastery Initiation given by Devi Dhyani, yet the process is the same.
"Seek and Ye shall find" and when found, the blockage goes and all its bad luck
goes with it. These blockages are control blockages designed to distract you and
take your attention away from spiritual success. With these blockages in the
system The Initiation of Enlightenment is impossible because how can the
Ascended Masters of Initiation trust you as you will always be taking your
advice from the control blockages. Always you can fall...
As we removed all the blockages so our student had the vision of a sail being
unfurled. The mast of the sail stretched up through the antahkarana to infinity
and as the sail unfurled he felt the movement forward, with a good wind, in his
evolution. At this point he saw a group of Masters including my Master, Swami
Satchidananda, taking an interest in him. When all the blockages are gone, then
at this point these group of Masters will become the group of Initiating masters
for the Initiation of Enlightenment"
"Satchidanand seems to be
talking of a reality once written about by many Sages of the past but now
forgotten in the West!"
FREE ENERGY ENHANCEMENT MEDITATION - TALKS WITH THE MASTER JULY 2010
Hello Satchidanand,
Thanks for the the Streaming Video EE Level 1 Meditation.
Your last response must be full of love and light because I was able to watch
those videos you sent me and practise meditation on the same day. It's a
breakthrough for me.
Here's my first time experience with the EE Initiation 1 Meditation:
First, I have trouble straightening my spine (lower back) like you did in the
video when I'm sitting on the floor in the cross legged posture. I will work on
this, and I think stretching would probably help with this, right?
I also find myself having a hard time maintaining the posture. Like you said in
the video, I'm a beginner, so I have to frequently adjust my posture throughout
the meditation.
I'm not sure when I have aligned my spine correctly. I feel a cool, refreshing
sensation when I think I'm aligned properly, like the feeling you get when you
walk into an air conditioned room on a hot summer day. It's a very wonderful
feeling. Is this a symptom of aligning my spines correctly or is it all just my
imagination?
A few minutes into the meditation, I can feel that my body starts to shake. I
feel that the shaking comes from my heart beat, though I'm not sure, it could be
the result of staying in the posture for the first time - my muscles could just
be worn out.
I tried to follow the breathing you mentioned in the video during meditation,
but I keep getting the urge to pause and stop breathing in between the in and
out breaths. Should I ignore or follow my urge?
Today, I definitely feel that I have more
energy. I feel the extra energy comes from the area of my body where my hands
were placed during meditation.
I also loved the first talk!
Thanks again for your response.
Andy
IF A SIMPLE STUDENT CAN GET THIS ENERGY,
THIS POWERING UP FIRST TIME WITH ONE INITIATION STREAMING VIDEO - AND EVERY
STUDENT GETS THESE EXPERIENCES - THINK WHAT IS POSSIBLE FOR YOU!!
Hello Andy,
First, this is not your imagination.
Spiritual Kundalini Energy is real and this is your first meeting with it!!
First, use a cushion.
Use a BIG cushion sufficient to get your spine in alignment with the energies
from the center of the Universe into the center of the earth.
Go with the feeling to hold the breath when you feel to.
Do not do it all the time. Just when you feel it!
You have to feel when you are in alignment. Air conditioned will do.
Then understand that it is possible to be more aligned, closer to the center.
Search.
Keep searching for the center.
Shaking is normal, but usually it is the result of energy blockages - tell me
more next time.
Meditate every day, twice a day.
Try to increase your periods of meditation - do not push too much - easily.
Power Up!!
Get back to me with more experiences.
Copy to the blog!!

L'Escala SEPTEMBER 2006 With Gerhard
TRIP TO
THE MONASTERY OF MONTSERRAT
Gerhard is an economist with the
Central bank and visits all over the world on Conferences. Here he is on the
course at the Monastery of Montserrat just outside of Barcelona where we
made an excursion with Satchidanand, Devi, Rodika and Ciprian.
The course for me was really a big
step forward. I had previously completed the first half of the course in
2005.
After
finishing the second half of this course of Energy Enhancement I am enjoying
the benefits of increased energy flow, a strong feeling of love to remove
all remaining blockages.
From a spiritual perspective my
abilities to detect and remove blockages has increased very very very
rapidly and substantially.
But more important to me is the
feeling that I am gaining back all the spiritual abilities I need to move
faster on the way to Enlightenment.
Prior to Energy Enhancement, I started with the intuition school were I
received a training in chakra reading, followed by an Energy Mastery
Seminar, followed by a one year Clairvoyance training program.
But during this Energy Enhancement course I for the first time got a method
to deal with the all relationship disturbing sub personalities.
This insight helped me to understand
all the sub personalities that were disturbing the harmonious relationship I
was aiming for.
During the Energy Enhancement course I also could improve my
psychic vision substantially.
And the BEST all the improvements are still taking place
after leaving the last two week course in La Escala!
MANY OF OUR STUDENTS HAVE
RETURNED FOR OUR COURSE IN SPAIN THIS YEAR
WHICH SURELY SAYS SOMETHING
ABOUT ENERGY ENHANCEMENT
WE HAVE ALSO TAKEN THE
OPPORTUNITY TO ADD NEW PICTURES TAKEN BY YUKO SATO AND JEAN FROM THE
COURSE
SATCHIDANAND BY JEAN
I have put
together a testimonial below. After last years testimonial I was struggling for
something new to say, so I have gone for a different angle.......
- MEDITATION ENERGY ENHANCEMENT TESTIMONIAL FROM
THE SEPTEMBER 2006 COURSE
Yuko comes from Japan and is a
Professional Photographer in Shanghai and London. Before coming on the
course she had not meditated before although she has been trying Yoga for a
while...
Oh my god, I changed a lot!
I screamed with silence.
I was sitting in the bar around 9
p.m. by myself in Barcelona on the first night after my Energy Enhancement
Course. On the way back to the hotel, I wanted to have one drink.
Surrounding by local Spanish people, everybody had a good time with their
own friends, even a bartender was chatting with some regular customers.
I was drinking a glass of red wine
in the middle of them and felt totally relaxed without fear. I enjoyed the
moment of being, by myself, in foreign county as a stranger.
YUKO SATO TAKING A GLASS OF WINE IN
GIRONA, SPAIN DURING THE ENERGY ENHANCEMENT COURSE - TAKEN BY SATCHIDANAND
If I were to be here before, I
could not relax this situation, I might worry too much, for example, how
they think about me? how am I look like? do I look a bit lonely? am I look
OK? etc...... too many of small thoughts, however they usually are big
enough to destroy having a simple good time....
To be honest, I have not had that
feeling, "without fear...." for the whole 33 years of my life.
This is just after the two weeks of
an Energy Enhancement meditation course.
YUKO SATO TAKING MEDITATING IN THE
ENERGY ENHANCEMENT CENTER IN SPAIN DURING THE ENERGY ENHANCEMENT COURSE - THE
MOVING INTO THE SOUL INFUSED PERSONALITY INITIALLY ONLY HAPPENS OCCASIONALLY,
BUT AS WE INTEGRATE MORE AND MORE IT BECOMES PERMANENT IN ENLIGHTENMENT - TAKEN
BY SATCHIDANAND
During the course, I
had many interesting and amazing experiences through meditation. I saw three
black snakes, a BM with snake hair, a black rose covered with thousands of
ants, a devil who controls and sucks the energy from me and thousands of
innocent people, frogs, parasite eggs...etc..
All of them were blockages and
implants in my body and my chakras.
Then I removed all of them using
the Energy Enhancement Techniques.
The techniques are simple and
powerful, moreover effective.
I did not feel any difficulty
during the course. On the contrary it is fun and enjoyable.
The meditation with Satchi and Devi
is sailing with fresh wind, also they have a big
map. You can not be lost.
After the EE course, I went to the Juice fasting place in Portugal.
I did it for two weeks and I felt so much energy without eating.
I went for walking in the mountains
for 3 hours, 2 hours yoga practice, swimming in the sea and meditation
everyday.
After my Energy Enhancement Course,
I am the most energetic person in this fasting program, people who work
there, they thought I am not a normal human being, because I am smiling and
happy all the time.
I feel absolutely happy and full of
love.
(Satchidanand - fasting is a
spiritual technique used for thousands of years because as well as being
good for the waistline (Wasteline) and for the health, it is also working
internally to get rid of the energy blockages. Because Yuko had removed most
of her energy blockages during her first two weeks of the 4 weeks Energy
Enhancement Course, she did not have these problems, and was able to use the
fast to find and remove more of her internal energy blockages. Usually, it
is my habit to do a 28 day fast each year and there are no problems due
to the previous removal of internal energy blockages; I work as
normal, just difficulties with entertaining.)
Another change, I can feel other person's fear in my 2nd chakra. So I give
them love and ground their fear in centre of the earth. I understand the
world better, that keeps the sky of my heart is clear and the sun is
shining.
(Although we teach this during
Energy Enhancement Initiations, this removal of energy blockages from others
happens quite naturally once we begin to take back the power normally taken
from us by our separated psychotic sub-personalities. Integration of them back into
the Soul Personality. Once we integrate them we get back the psychic powers
they normally use to get us into trouble and destroy our lives using ego
strategies like the poor me and the violator. -
Satchidanand)
Yuko Sato
----------------------------
(Yuko, due to her Japaneseness and
her experiences in past lifetimes brought a colourful experience to the
Energy Enhancement Course. She had great fun removing her blockages. -
Satchidanand)
For meditation, I now do for at least one hour everyday, sometimes for two
hours.
I find new blockages every time.
Two days ago I found the river
bottom of my antahkarana and I saw a snake swimming under my antahkarana. I
have done the Energy Enhancement 7 steps for them and in the 6th step I met
a strong ice woman who can turn everybody and everything into ice.
Finally I grounded her.
I just drop lines of my meditation is going and I feel bright energy every
time I meditate.
Thank you for meditation
Love and light
Yuko Sato
Satchidanand
- Thanks Yuko. I would like to add that both Devi and I did a 58 day fast
this year after the January 2007 Course. Normally we do a month long fast
every year but this year 2 months. As usual it was easy and we continued
doing our normal work of teaching classes and working on the internet. Being
meditative sedentary types we do the fast for health and spiritual purposes.
We ascribe the ease of this process to the removal of Energy Blockages in
Energy Enhancement and we recommend a yearly fast to everyone who wants to
move on, too - of course with Energy Enhancement, to make it easy!

course by Streaming Video!!
Energy Enhancement Meditation Incredibly Profitable and
Successful Movie List:
Why is American Beauty By Sam Mendes and with Kevin Spacey on
our List?
MORE
ADVANCED THAN MEDITATION!!
FASTER
THAN MEDITATION
ABOVE AND
BEYOND MEDITATION
THE ENERGY
ENHANCEMENT MEDITATION COURSE IS THE FASTEST METHOD OF ENLIGHTENMENT
Well first of all, what makes a good movie? And
what makes an Incredibly Profitable and Successful Movie? Because
usually, the two go together, unless the bad guys against evolution
successfully oppose.
The Three Major themes of Enlightenment are..
Opening the Heart
The Mastery of Relationships.
Life and Death and Enlightenment.
And all truly good and Incredibly Profitable and
Successful Movies contain all these three themes and some spiritual
instruction of a major thoughtform which needs to be entered into
the consciousness of humanity.
At this moment, fifty percent of humanity have
not as yet successfully Opened their Hearts. These people will
enjoy, as Shakespeare said, “Movies full of Sound and Fury,
Signifying Nothing” which include the vast majority of all movies.
These fifty percent of people including all
levels of the Movie Making community will give moderate success to a
movie with a good script, costumes, music and production values. But
it is another paradigm for them, they cannot understand the meaning
and reality of the words, Intuition, Significance And Purpose.
At this moment, fifty percent of humanity have
Opened the Heart a little. Only these people understand the meaning
and reality of the words, Intuition, Significance And Purpose
Yet for real popularity and incredible money
making potential and for an over 400 Million Dollar in Receipts
Movie.
For one hundred percent of the people to go to a
movie a movie must contain both a good script, costumes, music and
production values, AND Intuition, Significance And Purpose.
This series of articles will talk more on the
theme of Significance which is, as Shakespeare pointed out, the most
important theme of all.
American Beauty By Sam Mendes and with Kevin
Spacey pounds on the theme of Life and Death but includes opening of
the heart and relationships.
It only fails to make loads of money because the
themes are not hidden enough to be accessible to most unevolved
Humanity.
For example, my DVD renter in Spain thought that
Lester was Killed by his wife whereas he was killed by Col. Frank
Fitts.
In satellite channels to India all themes to do
with sex and homosexuality are routinely removed and censored.
Thus the driving scenes and themes of the Movie
as when Col. Frank Fitts homosexually kisses Lester and provides the
motive for his murder, (Homosexuality).
And when Lester finds our The Mena Suvari
Character is a virgin and lovingly withdraws, (Sex) showing his
Initiation of the Mastery of Relationships and the reason for his
happiness and enlightenment just before he dies.
These two essential scenes are removed, censored,
from the movie because these two themes are not allowed to be seen
in India.
Thus for a billion people in India it is not
possible to understand the significance of this movie!
For real success in movies, you must be capable
of hiding all these themes and themes of even higher significance in
a Rip Roaring story as in “The Lord of the Rings”, “Star Wars” and
to a lesser extent, “Harry Potter” which I will go into in other
articles.
The American Beauty movie starts with Death, “In
one year I´ll be dead” says Kevin Spacey right at the beginning. At
the end of the movie, Lester, his character will be dead And also
Enlightened.
All
the people in the movie are totally mad.
Mad enough to kill, because they want something
which is not essential to their real nature and Soul Path.
Except
for Lester who progresses through and rejects, sees deeply into the
madness of what he is doing, and rejects..
He rejects Money and Career not in alignment
with his soul path representing his Initiation of the Opening Of
The Heart.
He rejects his going back to the old student
ways of flipping burgers, getting high with marijuana and
sculpting his body with weight training, for one year, to
attract the 16 years old Mena Suvari character, again
representing his Initiation of the Opening Of The Heart.
He
rejects inappropriate love as he sees deeply into the nature of
the homosexual Chris Cooper character, Col. Frank Fitts, USMC
and the 16 year old Mena Suvari character representing his
Initiation of the Mastery of Relationships.
This seeing deeply creates such love within his
heart for all and everything in his life, his mad wife and daughter,
true unattached love for Mena Suvari. At the end of the movie, after
having rejected everything not in alignment with his soul, he feels
wonderful for the first time in years.
In that moment he becomes Enlightened. Even when
Chris Coopers character kills him he says, “I suppose I should feel
really pissed off by the end of my stupid little life”, but then he
sees all the Beauty and Love of his life in flashbacks with the
music of the Beatles - "Love, Love is Old Love is New.. Because the
World is round it turns me on".
And he talks to the audience and says, when you
die, you will understand this too. And the Beatles, George Harrison,
music at the end of the movie supports this theme of Love – “Because
the world is round it turns me on”. How can even death spoil that
Vision of Love….
Lester’s
daughter, the Thora Birch character thinks wrongly that she will be
free and happy leaving her mad parents by leaving with Ricky, her
mad but beautiful drug dealing boyfriend to go to New York.
Whereas she really loves Ricky’s real several
moments of Soul Contact when he sees the souls beauty in the eyes of
Dead People, and sees the freedom of the Soul Energy in the
movements of a paper bag.
Ricky
really loves her and this is shown by the heart-stoppingly beautiful
Thomas Newman music whenever Love, the major theme of this picture,
comes down from heaven in connection with this love story between
Ricky and Lester’s daughter.
Ricky has had Satori. He has had a “Little
Glimpse out of the corner of his eye”, but now he needs to avoid
becoming “Comfortably Numb”, (Pink Floyd Song) where with their
“Wrong Livelihood” of drugs, (Gautama Buddha), not in alignment with
his soul path, will destroy both their lives in the future.
Lester’s
wife, the Annette Bening character, really takes the job of making
money seriously and you realise how mad she is when after an amusing
episode trying to sell a house, she beats herself up and cries
heart-rendingly.
She finds consolation from Lester’s lack of
interest in making money in the arms of her House Selling Hero,
Buddy, “Have you ever been nailed by the King!” and when Lester
finds out, when Lester, “Rains on her Parade” she screws herself up
to kill Lester. Mad!
Lester
tries to help her when he says “Its only a fucking Couch!” and then
she shows how seriously she takes her madness by retreating from
Love when Lester looks as if he is going to pour beer over her
Italian Silk Covered whatever, and by returning with a gun and a
desire for liberation from Lester. She is round the twist.
And yet she cries out in anguish when she returns
home to find Lester, Dead. She is not yet totally gone.
The sixteen year old Mena Suvari character has
written herself into a wrong thoughtform which will destroy her life
if she enters into it. She longs to be different, to be a beautiful
model, to climb the ladder of success with her sex.
She tells everyone that this is the way it is.
Life is like that. And this way can lead to success, yes, but it
will also lead towards madness as this wrong thoughtform takes you
away from your true soul path.
And the taking of the path leading you away from
your true soul path really is normal in just about everyone. It is
the major cause of all pain and bad luck in everyone’s life.
By, as yet not taking that path, the Mena Suvari
Character really is different!
And yet when Lester makes his sexual approach,
she tells Lester that she is a virgin. She really is different
again! And this causes Lester to come out of his lust. To see this
beautiful young lady as his daughter. Someone in need of love and
attention, and help. Not just as a sex object, but as someone he
truly loves.
As
the George Clooney character in Quentin Tarantino’s “From Dusk till
Dawn”, says at the end of the movie in a similar situation, “I may
be a Bastard, but I’m not a Fucking Bastard!”
Lust is not necessarily Love. Love is the Real
Opening of the Heart. Just wanting to really help someone else.
And this Opening of the Heart of Lester makes his
energy flow with the energy of true love for everyone in his life.
Just before he leaves his life, which is the destiny of all living
beings on this planet. “No-One gets out of Life, Alive!”
And
of course the maddest guy of all is the Chris Cooper character, Col.
Frank Fitts, USMC, who actually kills Lester with a gun. Like the Al
Pacino Character in “Angels in America” he is a repressed homosexual
who is driven mad by his repressed desires, and the need to hide
them from contemporary society.
Even his son, Ricky underestimates him, “You sad,
tired, old man”, because he does not understand the homosexual
repression which drives his life, to destroy all love and everyone
around him.
His wife, Ricky’s mother, is mad from lack of
love from her homosexual husband. Free Ricky is repressed, sent to
military school, sent to an asylum to be anaesthetised, Comfortably
Numb, “Because you need structure and discipline.” if you are
repressing anything, using the wrong thoughtform, not in alignment
with your true soul path..
Col. Frank Fitts kills Lester because he has
shown Lester the truth of his repressed homosexuality, of his
repressed desire, of his repressed love. And because that truth, if
it gets out, can destroy his carefully constructed life of repressed
madness: he has to kill Lester!
All the mad people in this movie are driven to
madness by the desire for something which is not essential to
anything but their selfish competitive egos. Wrong thoughtforms.
Wrong thinking.
And yet, this is the way of all human evolution.
We need to experience the results of all wrong thinking, all the bad
luck and bad Karma, until “We have been down that path, (All bad
paths), and we know where it ends” from the Matrix and again from
the Matrix, we know it, “From Balls to Bones”.
This wisdom is not intellectual, with many
lifetimes it becomes Hard Wired in, “From Balls to Bones” intuitive from the Soul Infused
Personality and is accessible from Child to Old Person.
And we will keep making those mistakes until we
know we have the Freedom, the Free Will, the Soul Intuition, “Only

Your Majesty,
I lately pass’d through Flanders and Brabant,
So many rich and blooming provinces,
Fill’d with a valiant, great, and honest people
To be the father of a race like this,
I thought must be divine indeed! and then
I stumbled on a heap of burnt men’s bones!
. . .
True, you are forced to act so; but that you
Could dare fulfil your task—this fills my soul
With shuddering horror! O ’tis pity that
The victim, weltering in his blood must cease
To chant the praises of his sacrificer!
And that mere men—not beings loftier far—
Should write the history of the world. But soon
A milder age will follow that of Philip,
An age of truer wisdom:—hand in hand,
The subjects’ welfare, and the sovereign’s greatness,
Will walk in union. Then the careful state
Will spare her children, and necessity
No longer glory to be thus inhuman.

PLATO ON POLITICS IN
"REPUBLIC"
Plato spends much of the
Republic narrating conversations about the Ideal State. But what about other
forms of government? The discussion turns to four forms of government that
cannot sustain themselves: timocracy/Monarchs, oligarchy (also called
plutocracy), democracy and tyranny/Dictatorship (also called despotism).
Timocracy or Kings and
Queens
Socrates defines a
timocracy
as a government ruled by people who love honor and are selected according to the
degree of honor they hold in society. Honor is often equated with wealth and
possession so this kind of gilded government leads to the people valuing
materialism above all things.
Oligarchy
These temptations create a
confusion between economic status and honor which is responsible for the
emergence of
oligarchy.
An oligarchy is a form of power structure in which
power
effectively rests with a small segment of society distinguished by royalty,
wealth, family ties, military control, or religious
hegemony.
The word oligarchy is from the Greek "to rule, to govern, to command" Such
states are often controlled by politically powerful families whose children are
heavily conditioned/implanted and mentored to be heirs of the power of the
oligarchy. In Book VIII, Socrates suggests that wealth will not help a pilot to
navigate his ship. This injustice divides the rich and the poor, thus creating
an environment for criminals and beggars to emerge. The rich are constantly
plotting against the poor and vice versa.
Democracy
As this socioeconomic
divide grows, so do tensions between social classes. From the conflicts arising
out of such tensions,
democracy
replaces the oligarchy preceding it. The poor overthrow the inexperienced
oligarchs and soon grant liberties and freedoms to citizens. A visually
appealing
demagogue
is soon lifted up to protect the interests of the lower class. However, with too
much freedom, the people become drunk, and tyranny takes over. Democracy, "Eat
shit, 10 Billion flies can't be wrong!"
Tyranny/Dictatorship
The excessive freedoms
granted to the citizens of a democracy ultimately leads to a
tyranny,
the furthest regressed type of government. These freedoms divide the people into
three socioeconomic classes: the dominating class, the capitalists and the
commoners. Tensions between the dominating class and the capitalists causes the
commoners to seek out protection of their democratic liberties. They invest all
their power in their democratic demagogue, who, in turn, becomes corrupted by
the power and becomes a tyrant with a small entourage of his supporters for
protection and absolute control of his people.
The Philosopher King
Ironically, the ideal state
outlined by Socrates closely resembles a tyranny, but they are on opposite ends
of the spectrum. This is because the philosopher king who rules in the ideal
state is not self-centered but is dedicated to the good of the state insofar as
the philosopher king is the one with illuminated knowledge, and he is tested as
not being psychopathic. Like a Civil Servant he has passed his examinations.
Like a Judge he is protected from secret meetings with interested parties.
Usually they are retired by the oligarchs.
Tacitus,
"Indeed, a nation or city is
ruled by the people, or by an upper class, or by a monarch. A government system
that is invented
from a choice of these same components
is sooner idealised than realised; and even if realised, there will be no future
for it." Tacitus - To ravage, to slaughter, to usurp under false titles,
they call empire; and where they make a desert, they call it peace.
The year 2006 was an unusually rich year for significant birthdays: We
commemorated the 250th birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Jan. 27, 1756) and
the 300th birthday of Benjamin Franklin (Jan. 17, 1706). It is therefore fitting
that, as we bid adieu to 2006, we remember the great genius and sublime artist,
Rembrandt van Rijn, born 400 years ago, on July 15, 1606 (Rembrandt lived till
1669). Like Mozart and Franklin, Rembrandt was a protagonist in a time of
tremendous political, social, and economic upheaval, dominated by his nation’s
80-year struggle for its independence from Hapsburg Spain, and by the Thirty
Years War, both of which ended with the 1648 Peace of Westphalia More than any
other single figure of that era, Rembrandt embodies the most beautiful idea of
his time, as it was given expression in the Treaty of Westphalia: that to
establish peace among the warring parties, “each Party shall endeavour to
procure the Benefit, Honour and Advantage of the other.” - “Treaty of
Westphalia: The Avalon Project”; Yale Law School,
www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/westphal.htm.
Through his hundreds of paintings, etchings, engravings, and drawings, Rembrandt
left us one of the most extensive bodies of creative output of any individual in
history. His scores of self-portraits, an unprecedented and never-surpassed
record of his life and character, provide a brilliant autobiography, as
revealing as any ever written.
His courage and love for mankind, in the face of the evil of Venice’s Habsburg
oligarchy, whose hatred and contempt for humanity Rembrandt stood courageously
against, as so beautifully expressed in his art, should inspire us today to take
on Venice’s satanic offspring, with Rembrandtian determination and agapeŻ.
While art historians have pieced together the outlines of his life—and these are
available in thousands of books, more of which are published each year, and on
hundreds of Internet websites—if we really want to know Rembrandt, we must find
the truth in his art: his paintings, drawings, and prints, which tell us much
about the impact that the political, scientific, and cultural revolutions of his
time had on his thinking and his work. And we must look at his Enormous artistic
output in the context of the world shaking events that took place in the 17th
Century, and shaped his world view.
* * *
In 1606, the English King James I established two merchant companies eager to
stake their claims upon the legendary riches of North America. They set forth on
Dec. 20, and on May 14 of the following year; 108 settlers of the Virginia
Company landed at what they called Jamestown Island, to establish the first
English colony in the New World. Some five months before the English ships
embarked from London, a boy, the ninth of ten children, was born to a prosperous
miller of Leiden, in the province of Holland, in the northern Netherlands.
Harmen Gerritsz. van Rijn (whose name is derived from the Rhine River), and his
wife, Neeltje van Suijttbroeck, who was the daughter of a baker, named their son
Rembrandt.
These two events, the English colonization in North America, and the birth
of Rembrandt, are connected by more
than mere happenstance. The historical and cultural forces that led to the
establishment of the United States of America, also produced this artistic
genius who took into his art all the great discoveries and achievements of the
15th-Century Renaissance, and added to them his own contributions, which until
now, have never been surpassed. As we shall see, Rembrandt anticipated, and gave
expression, through his visual metaphors, to the very principles—the
“self-evident truths”—that formed the foundation of the American Republic, as
they were to be expressed a century after his death: the inalienable rights of
all men; the basic goodness of mankind; the role of government as the protector
of the common good.
Rembrandt’s commitment to these principles would place him in direct opposition
to the oligarchical forces that seized control of the Netherlands during the
17th Century, just as the founders of the American Republic would find
themselves in a struggle, ultimately victorious, against that same Anglo-Dutch
Liberal power.
Young Rembrandt
Rembrandt chose a propitious place for his birth. Early 17th-Century Leiden was
one of the leading intellectual and artistic centers in Europe, home to the
celebrated Leiden University. It was also a magnet for refugees of religious
persecution from all over Europe, who were fleeing the horrors of the ongoing
religious wars and from the terrifying Spanish (Hapsburg) Inquisition. These
included Puritans from England, Sephardic Jews from Spain and Portugal,
Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe, and Catholics and Protestants of all stripes
fleeing the horrors of the wars which swept the continent throughout the 16th
and half of the 17th Centuries. The influx of immigrants added to the
intellectual and economic vigor of the city, and helped to shape Rembrandt’s
earliest impressions.
By Rembrandt’s time, these religious and political conflicts—which began in 1492
with the expulsion of the Jews from Spain by a monarchy in thrall to Venetian
manipulation setting Catholics against Protestants, Protestant sects against one
another, nobles against peasants, feudal barons against the merchant
class—ignited a series of wars which had lasted 150 years, and drenched the soil
of Europe in blood over much of its territory. The Thirty Years War (1618-48),
at the end of this period, devastated most of Europe, but struck most severely
in present-day Germany: An estimated 5 million people were sent to their graves
in Germany alone, and the population fell from 15 million to less than 10
million. Those who escaped the immediate effects of the war, then faced famine
and disease as farmlands and cities were destroyed; the Plague struck again and
again, adding its grim toll to the death count.
Rembrandt depicts himself in
1648, as he looks up from his etching. It is the year of the Peace of
Westphalia, ending the Thirty Years War, but Rembrandt’s expression is anything
but pacific; it seems to say, there is still a lot of work to be done.
The setting of Rembrandt’s birth and education cannot be separated from the fact
that the Dutch attitude toward the education of children, even from the “lower
classes,” had been shaped by the influence of the schools of the Brethren of the
CommonLife, a religious/political movement, founded by Gerhardt Groote in the
15th Century, whose ideas were then disseminated by Thomas a` Kempis’s widely
read book, The Imitation of Christ. In Leiden of Rembrandt’s time, the movement,
known as the Devotio Moderna, promoted the precept that the individual believer
should develop a personal, direct relationship to God, without the intercession
of priests, or other anointed figures. By reading the Bible, the individual
could develop the spiritual strength to live in “the imitation of Christ.”
Needless to say, this was a revolutionary idea, one which demanded literacy for
the common man, and challenged the feudal system, in which a small number of
oligarchs ruled over the mass of what they viewed as human cattle.
Among the more famous students
of the Brotherhood schools were the Renaissance geniuses Nicholas of Cusa, the
founder of both the modern commonwealth form of nation state, and of modern
science; and the Erasmus of Rotterdam associated with England’s Sir Thomas More
In this setting of his childhood and early youth, Rembrandt, as the son of a
well-to-do miller, attended the Latin School in Leiden, from age 9 to 13. Then,
in 1620, at the time of the Plymouth settlement in what was to become the U.S.
Commonwealth of Massachusetts, he was registered at the University of Leiden to
study literature, although we have no record of his having ever attended classes
there. Instead, he was apprenticed at age 15 to a local artist, Jacob Isaacsz.
van Swanenburg, with whom he studied until 1622.
Perhaps the question of why Rembrandt was taken out of school, and apprenticed
to Swanenburg, is answered by Rembrandt’s biographer Gary Schwartz. In 1618, the
year of the outbreak of the Thirty Years War, Maurits, Prince of Orange, the
Venetian-controlled son of the great and good William the Silent, the Father of
the Netherlands, overthrew by force the ecumenical government of Leiden, and
installed a virtual Calvinist dictatorship. The coup extended beyond the city
council, into the schools, and other institutions of civic life.
The political opponents of the House of Orange and its Calvinist allies in
Leiden were loosely organized around the followers of the Remonstrant faith, a
branch of the Protestant Church, with which Rembrandt was associated. When the
“Orange Revolution” in Leiden overturned the more moderate and tolerant
Protestant leadership, other outcast groups, including both renegade Protestant
sects and Catholics, tended to coalesce around the Remonstrants. It will be the
members of this latter "coalition,” with its ties into Amsterdam, who will
constitute the humanist circles that nurtured Rembrandt in his early years in
that city. Rembrandt’s mother was a Catholic; his father, a lapsed member of the
Dutch Reformed Church. This may help to explain his lifelong ecumenical outlook.

The Leiden Studio In that setting, 16-year-old Rembrandt had travelled to
Amsterdam to begin his advanced training as a painter in the studio of Pieter
Lastman. From the time that Rembrandt began his Leiden studies with Swanenberg in
Leiden, he was taken under the protection and patronage of leading members of
the Leiden/Amsterdam humanist intelligentsia. One of the key figures among them
was the Remonstrant Pieter Hendricksz Schrijver (Petrus Scriverius),
Swanenburg’s next-door neighbor, a Classical scholar, and patron of vernacular
Dutch Renaissance poetry. Scriverius’s Amsterdam relatives, espespecially his
cousin Geurt Dirsksz. van Beuningen, an alderman, and his brother Jan Dircksz.,
were active in the art market.
From 1617 to 1646, the van Beuningens were one of the two leading auctioneers of
Amsterdam, and Rembrandt would have extensive ties with them, as he built his
own collection of artworks, and sold his many prints through their auctions.
In 1622, the year Rembrandt arrived in Amsterdam, the van Beuningens were
elected to the town council, thus giving the young artist important allies in
the city. Moreover, Rembrandt’s new master, Lastman, lived next door to Guert
Dircksz van Beuningen.
Meanwhile, even before Rembrandt left for Amsterdam to study with Lastman, he
and his friend and fellow artist, Jan Lievens, had set up a studio in Leiden in
1624. After his apprenticeship in Amsterdam, Rembrandt returned to Leiden, and
began producing etchings, in addition to paintings and drawings.
At this time, he took on his first students.
Rembrandt’s prints were to become the greatest part of his artistic legacy. Like
the German master Albrecht Du¨rer (1471-1528) before him, Rembrandt understood
the power of mass organizing through the medium of prints (he owned several
series of Du¨rer’s prints, along with those of the great Italian Renaissance
artist Andrea Mantegna [1431-1506]). Each copperplate could produce hundreds of
prints, and thus they were able to reach a wide market, whereas his paintings,
which were commissioned by powerful and wealthy patrons, would be seen by only a
privileged few.
Through these prints—the equivalent of today’s leaflets and pamphlets—Rembrandt
was producing a “mass effect.”
His etchings reached far beyond the borders of The Netherlands, and were
responsible for the international reputation he enjoyed during his lifetime. In
1660, the Italian painter Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri), speaking of
Rembrandt’s prints, which were circulating in Italy, said, “I frankly consider
him to be a great virtuoso.”
He also
produced the first of his self-portrait prints in this period In this rough
etching from 1629, Rembrandt has given us one of the first examples of what will
be a lifetime of portrayals of his own image: a hold-nothing back autograph. His
appearance, despite his early success conveys anxiety; it’s a troubled, but also
determined expression. The tension around his mouth and eyes is reinforced by
the lopsided set of his collar and his gaze away from us, toward a view we
cannot see, but which is only suggested by his reaction to it. In this early
print, we find the seed crystal of the mature artist he is to become.
- A self-portrait of 1629,
when the artist is only 23; these are troubled times, but Rembrandt appears
confident, even combative and ready to take on the world.
In this early period, he and Lievens were “discovered” by Constantijn Huygens,
the powerful statesman and secretary to the Prince of Orange. Huygens, the
father of Gottfried Leibniz’s associate and ally, Christiaan Huygens, was the
sometime Ambassador of Orange to the English Court of St. James, and was
knighted by King James I; the elder Huygens would later turn against Rembrandt,
and was involved in the persecution of the artist, which led to Rembrandt’s
bankruptcy.
The question of Constantijn Huygens’ relationship to Rembrandt and his key role
as a leading figure in the Court at The Hague, is somewhat paradoxical,
considering what we know of the plot by Christiaan Huygens and Gottfried Leibniz
to copy covert papers from the British monarchy’s captive documents of Leonardo
da Vinci, doing this, under the protection of Constantijn, in service of the
science program of France’s Jean-Baptiste Colbert.
Constantijn Huygens was, at the time, the leading promoter in the Netherlands,
of the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), the official painter of
the Council of Trent, and the Counter-Reformation. (Rubens, it seems, took after
his father, Jan, a radical Calvinist and city counselor in Antwerp, who became
infamous for carrying on an illicit affair with the emotionally fragile wife of
the Dutch hero William the Silent.) Rubens himself became court painter at
Antwerp, and later held the impressive title, “Secretary to the King in His
Secret Cabinet.” Huygens apparently intended to make Rembrandt a “Dutch Rubens,”
an effort doomed to fail. No two artists could have been more diametrically
opposed in their life’s mission: Rubens used his considerable skills as a
propagandist for the oligarchy, while Rembrandt’s art upheld the nobility of the
most humble of his fellow men and women.
Yet, Rembrandt initially benefitted from Huygens’ patronage: Huygens held the
powerful post of Secretary to the Statholder and Prince of Orange Frederik
Hendrik. Once established in Amsterdam, the young artist received a number of
commissions for the court at The Hague; among them were a pair of portraits of
the Prince (1631) and his wife, Amalia van Solm (1632).
Rembrandt was then 26 years old.
Between 1628 and 1631, Lievens and Rembrandt were kept busy with commissions
from the Court. These included at least two of the Apostle Paul (St. Paul in
Prison and St. Paul at His Desk)—Paul will become a subject that Rembrandt
returns to again later, many times, including a self-portrait as the saint.
Rembrandt clearly saw something in the life of Paul, who underwent a
transformation, rejecting his past as a persecutor of the followers of Jesus in
the Roman Empire, to become a leader and teacher of the movement after Christ,
following his “Damascus Road” conversion. Perhaps there was also a resonance in
Rembrandt’s mind between Paul’s letters to the early “Christian” communities,
and his own many “epistles”—prints—which reached out into the population to
spread the ideas of the Renaissance.
Amsterdam: The Venetian
Takeover
. . Men hastened toward a country where freedom raised its gladdening flag,
where respect and safety and revenge on her oppressors were assured to fugitive
religion. When we consider the confluence of every people in today’s Holland,
who upon entering her territory regain their human rights, what must it have
been then when all the rest of Europe still groaned under an oppression of
spirit, when Amsterdam was well nigh the sole free port of entry to all
opinions? . .
At the very time when the republic of Holland was still struggling for her
existence, she advanced the borders of her territory across the ocean and
quietly built up her East Indies thrones. —Schiller, Revolt of the Netherlands -
“The History of the Revolt of the United Netherlands Against Spanish Rule,”
“Introduction,” Susan Johnson, trans.; in Friedrich Schiller, Poet of Freedom,
Vol. III (Washington, D.C.: Schiller Institute, 1990).
The Amsterdam Rembrandt found at the age of 24 was a city of contradictions: As
mentioned above, the city, which allowed a high degree of toleration in an age
of religious warfare, became a refuge from war and persecution; at the
same time, it was home to the most evil financial oligarchy in history.
Following Venice’s defeat of the League of Cambrai in 1511, the Serenissima
Repubblica seized on Hapsburg Spain as its instrument to impose the bestial rule
of the Inquisition, to terrify and demolish the enemies of its imperial rule.
Thus was unleashed a century and a half of bloodletting, whose purpose was to
crush out of existence the political scientific, and cultural breakthroughs of
the 15th-Century Renaissance, and the emergence of the modern nation-state
republic.
And so were founded, at the dawn of the 17th Century the British and Dutch East
India Companies - the “Anglo-Dutch Liberal” imperial maritime power. Indeed, the
Dutch “Republic” was established as a replica of its Venetian parent: The
republic was no such thing; rather, it was a tightly organized oligarchy of
leading families ruled through a network of political and financial
institutions. Then the Venetian takeover of Britain when William of Orange,
representing the Venetian Oligarchy, took
the British throne.
Rembrandt’s painting of “The Syndics of the Cloth makers’ Guild (The
Staalmeesters)” of 1662 - see below - perfectly captures the character of this
Venetian-style financial oligarchy: The conspiratorial meeting is interrupted,
as these powerful men go over their books; the man at the far right is clutching
his moneybag, which has taken on the shape of a snake’s heads - Snakes in Suits. The standing
figure at the left has risen from his seat, and cast a warning look at the
intruder. What are they hiding?
In 1550, the Spanish King Charles V unleashed the inquisition in his imperial
colony, the Netherlands, and an orgy of executions began. With the arrival in
1567 of the Duke of Alva and his 10,000 troops, came the establishment of the
“Council of Blood,” a religious tribunal; over the next six years, 12,000 souls
were condemned to a horrible death. A few years later, in 1576, the “Spanish
Fury” consumed Antwerp: Over a three-day period, 8,000 civilians were
slaughtered by Spanish troops. One historian described the carnage: “The whole
country became a charnel house; the death-bell tolled in every village; not a
family but was called to mourn for its dearest relatives, while survivors
stalked listlessly about, the ghosts of their former selves, among the wrecks of
their former homes. The spirit of the nation, within a few months after the
arrival of Alva, seemed hopeless broken. . . .” Robert Ingraham, “Origins of the
Anglo-Dutch World Order,” unpublished manuscript; Part V: “The Dutch Tragedy.”
The Amsterdam which Rembrandt found, some 50 years after these events, was
already home to the Venetian-installed Dutch East India Company, founded in
1601-02, whose predatory, anti-nation-state, slave-trading policies Rembrandt
opposed all this life. In fact, in the year Rembrandt was born 1606, the first
Dutch slave ships sailed with their human cargo to the New World But, as a city
of great wealth, Amsterdam was also a center of science, culture, and learning:
The city saw its population quadruple between 1600 and 1650, from 50,000 to
200,000.
Among the world-shaking developments that took place during Rembrandt’s lifetime
was the founding of European settlements in the New World, including the sailing
of the Mayflower in 1620, a voyage which included Dutch citizens. All of Holland
would have known of, and followed, the fortunes of those who sailed, and would
have received news of the progress of the emigre´s in America. New Amsterdam
(now New York) was founded on Manhattan Island in 1624 as an overseas province
of the Dutch Republic.
But unlike the oligarchs Rembrandt portrayed in his “Syndics” painting, who saw
the New World as a “gold mine” for looting, he and his fellow humanists
recognized that the intention behind the colonization of America was to form
commonwealths reflecting the principle of the great ecumenical Council of
Florence (1438-39), at a relatively safe distance from pro-oligarchical cultures
dominating Europe then (and still today).
“The Syndics of the
Clothmakers’ Guild” (1662). Rembrandt’s group-portrait brilliantly captures the
bland evil of the leading merchants of Amsterdam—the Venice of the North—as they
tally their profits. The man at the far right is clutching his moneybag, which
has taken on the shape of snake’s heads - Snakes in Suits.
During the same period, in which Rembrandt grew to maturity, the works of
Shakespeare, who died in 1616, began to reach the continent, in translation. To
give only a few examples:
By 1604, Romeo and Juliet appeared in German; in 1621, The Tragedy of Titus
Andronicus was translated into Dutch; a few years later, Julius Caesar, King
Lear, and Hamlet were printed in German; in 1654, the Taming of the Shrew
appeared in Dutch. In fact, there is evidence that Rembrandt may have been in
Shakespeare’s London: He drew the gates the city in the early 1640s, and may
have accompanied his close friend, the rabbi and leading Jewish intellectual in
Europe, Menasseh ben Israel, who went to England to convince Oliver Cromwell to
open the country to Jewish immigration.
Turn now to the key historical turning points in Rembrandt’s life, to see how
they were reflected in his art.
The Partnership With
Uylenburgh
The 1630s were productive years for the young artist. In 1631, he was put in
touch with the Amsterdam art dealer Hendrick van Uylenburgh, by the humanist
networks who had guided his career up till then. That same year, Rembrandt moved
into the home of Henrick and his wife Maria van Eyck, artist bringing with him
two or three of his students. It was then that his career took off.
Between November 1631 and December 1635, he was the most highly sought
portraitist in Amsterdam, painting as many as 50 portraits of the city’s leading
figures. In this same period, he executed “The Anatomy Lecture of Dr. Nicolaes
Tulp” (1632), a group portrait of the top physicians and surgeons; and numerous
biblical histories, including “Belshazzar’s Feast” (1635).
Among his sitters was
prominent intellectual Johannes Wtenbogaert, who for half a century had been
fighting to create a tolerant, humanist Christian faith. He was the author in
1610, of the “Remonstrance,” which gave its name to the movement whose intent
was to bring about reconciliation among the numerous Protestant sects.
Rembrandt’s partnership with Uylenburgh brought him another kind of happiness as
well: Henrick’s cousin Saskia became Rembrandt’s wife in 1634; she was the
daughter of a burgomaster in Friesland, Romburtus Uylenburgh, who also served as
attorney general of the republic. In the short time of their marriage—Saskia
died in 1642—Rembrandt produced numerous images of his wife, including the 1636
etching reproduced here, “Self-Portrait with Saskia”
This small etching (41⁄8
× 35⁄8″) is an example, albeit in miniature, of an innovation by Rembrandt in
marriage portraits, in which the wife was depicted participating in the
activities of her husband. Here, a strong light falls on Saskia, whose gaze is
directed ambiguously both at us, and at her young artisthusband. He,
contrariwise, is half in shadow, as her light illumines his “better side.” One
art historian has suggested that the portrait could be an illustration of the
Dutch maxim Liefde baart kunst (Love gives birth to art). Rembrandt portrays
himself as looking up from a sketch, for which his wife/muse Saskia is the
model.
“Self-Portrait with Saskia” (1636). Rembrandt presents his wife Saskia as his
better half
Around this time, in 1635, Rembrandt produced one of his most powerful images,
the etching of “Christ Driving the Moneychangers from the Temple”. By this time
virtually the entire class of wealthy Netherlanders was directly involved in the
East Indies trade, or finance, or both.
“Christ Driving the
Moneychangers from the Temple” (1635). Rembrandt’s etching is a less-than-subtle
message to the Dutch merchants and moneylenders, who have become “a den of
thieves,” getting fat off the East Indies trade.
The message of this print is unambiguous: Jesus stands at the center of the
composition, wielding a heavy rope, which he swings vigorously, as the usurers
cower before him. The scene is derived from accounts in all four Gospels, as in
Luke (19:46): “My house shall be called the House of Prayer; but ye have made it
a Den of Thieves.” There is a humorous aspect as well, almost slapstick, as one
man is dragged away by a calf (a reference to the Golden Calf? But this one has
a comical expression); another clings desperately to his pouch of money; a dog
barks frantically at Jesus. In the background the priests of the temple look on
with expressions of conster nation, disbelief, or wonder. While Rembrandt has
“borrowed” the figure of Jesus from a woodcut of the same subject by Albrecht
Du¨rer, he makes it completely his own, by changing the light source from a
candle on the wall, to having a burst of light emanating from Christ’s hand as
he swings the rope.
In 1641, Rembrandt’s son Titus was born (the couple’s first three children, a
boy, and two girls, died soon after birth); the following year, his beloved wife
Saskia died, and Rembrandt was overcome with grief.
Though he would paint one of
his most celebrated works, the “Nightwatch” (its official title is “The Company
of Frans Banning Cock Preparing To March Out”) that year, after 1642,
Rembrandt’s fortunes took a sharp turn. His big commissions all but dried up,
and over the coming decade, there were few portraits of leading citizens.
The Anglo-Dutch oligarchy, it seems, had no use for Rembrandt.
1648: The End of the Thirty Years War It is hardly possible to imagine the joy
that must have swept over Europe at the signing of the Peace of Mu¨nster/Westphalia
in October of 1648.
Treaty of Westphalia.
The treaty stated: That there
shall be on the one side and the other a perpetual Oblivion, Amnesty, or Pardon
of all that has been committed since the beginning of these Troubles, in what
place, or what manner soever the Hostilitys have been practis’d, in such a
manner, that no body, under any pretext whatsoever, shall practice any Acts of
Hostility, entertain any Enmity, or cause any Trouble to each other; neither as
to Persons, Effects and Securitys neither of themselves or by others, neither
privately nor openly.
That they shall not act, or permit to be acted, any wrong or injury to any
whatsoever; but that all that has pass’d on the one side, and the other, as well
before as during the War, in Words, Writings, and Outrageous Actions, in
Violences, Hostilitys, Damages and Expences, without any respect to Persons of
Things, shall be entirely abolish’d in such a manner that all that might be
demanded of, or pretended to, by each other on that behalf, shall be bury’d in
eternal Oblivion - Treaty of Westphalia.
In a number of etchings and paintings from this period, Rembrandt gives visual
form to the idea of compassion, or agapeŻ, expressed in the Treaty of
Westphalia. The most famous of these is his magnificent etching, “Christ Healing
the Sick,” better known as the “Hundred Guilder Print” (known by this name
because of the unusually high price it fetched). The work, done in etching,
drypoint, and engraving, took several years to complete.
“Christ Healing the Sick”
(1648). This etching, is one of Rembrandt’s most celebrated, also done the year
of the Peace of Westphalia. The story is based on the Gospel of Matthew: “And
great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.”
The scene places Christ at the
center of the composition; He is illuminated by a strong light from the left,
outside the space of the picture, which falls over the group to His right; but
He also emanates a powerful light from within: By this light we can clearly
“read” the expressions and thoughts on the faces of those listening who come
forward to hear him, and to be healed, both physically and spiritually. He is
the “organizing principle” of the drama. The script Rembrandt has chosen for its
dramatic potential, is taken from the Gospel of Matthew (19:1-30): “And great
multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.” From the right, a crowd
enters through the city gate: They are the sick, the crippled, the aged, who
beseech His help. At the left of the stage, the Pharisees, the religious
fundamentalists, who demand to know Christ’s “position” on “single issues,” like
divorce: “The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him,
‘Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?’ ” In front of the
Pharisees, two mothers approach Christ, offering their children for His
blessing, as Peter, at Christ’s right hand, tries to hold the women back, but
Christ reproaches Peter: “Thenwere there brought unto him little children, that
he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them But
Jesus said, ‘Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for
of such is the kingdom of heaven.’ ”
Seated between the two women, a youth is deep in thought; he is the rich young
man, who came to Christ seeking eternal life. Jesus tell him: “If thou wilt be
perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have
treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.” But when “the young man heard that
saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.”
If he had said, "Buy the
Energy Enhancement Course" it may well have been better, but Money is the Great
Blockage. Money is one of the major stoppages on the path of Illumination.
Jesus tells his disciples, “It
is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man
to enter into the kingdom of Heaven.” Get rid of your attachment to Money!! Lo and behold!
As we turn our eyes to the right-hand side of the stage, just inside the gate,
there is the camel; the rich man is at the far left, with his back to the
viewer; each of these is as far from Christ as can be, and still be on stage.
Rembrandt conveys Matthew’s summation of this verse, “many that are first shall
be last; and the last shall be first,” by presenting the poor and the sick with
more precise definition, and greater substance, than the rich and powerful. In
doing so, he gives us a rich visual metaphor for the idea of the common good,
which imbues the Treaty of Westphalia.
The Bankruptcy
In 1656, Dutch East India Company shares plummeted on the Amsterdam Exchange and
many investors were ruined.
Like all the elite orchestrated bubbles, someone knows when it is going to
happen. Their purpose is to, "fleece the sheep" who have been encouraged by the
previous years of profit to invest more and more of their Money. An advanced Ponzi Scheme which
historically has worked well for all time as it functions through greed,
designed to steal the money of the middle classes and their pension funds.
Among them was Rembrandt van Rijn, now 50, who was declared bankrupt and whose
possessions were put up for sale. The process leading to Rembrandt’s bankruptcy
however, was not so simple; his finances unravelled over the decade of the
1650s, as powerful patrons abandoned him, and the vultures closed in. In January
1653, with the country at war with England, and finances tight, Rembrandt’s
creditors called in their loans. The details of all this are somewhat murky,
although certain facts are known. In order to hold off his creditors, he
borrowed additional funds, while a large portion of his debt was sold off to
that day’s version of hedge fund traders. Things continued to fall apart; two
sales of his household goods took place by the late Summer of 1655 Finally, in
November of 1657, Rembrandt was forced to sell off his house, and his entire art
collection, a collection he had spent a lifetime gathering —dozens of Du¨rer and
Mantegna prints; copies and engravings after the greatest works of art in
Italy—those of Leonardo, Raphael, and others, as well as Arisa quarter century’s
production of his etched copper plates.
There was a decidedly
political motivation behind the financial persecution of Rembrandt; the key
moneylender who finally called in the chips, was Gerbrand Ornia, one of the
richest men in Amsterdam, and a relative of one of Rembrandt’s earlier
protectors, Cornelis Witsen. Witsen who held the post of sheriff, was described
in a chronicle of the time, as a drunkard and a crook, who stole from the public
coffers. Ultimately, it was Witsen and Ornia who forced Rembrandt to sell his
house for a mere 300 guilders One explanation for all this, was that the two
moneylenders were enemies of Rembrandt’s patron and protector, the Remonstrant
Willem Schrijver
In defiance of his tormentors, Rembrandt continued to work throughout this
period. Among his most powerful works are portraits of his common-law wife
Hendrickje, and his son Titus
—these portraits are among the
most loving and sublime of all Rembrandt’s output. Clearly, he found refuge with
his family from his financial and political battles. A beautiful portrait of
Titus from 1655, show his son, then about 14 years old, deep in thought, pen in
hand, and papers before him either for writing or drawing (Rembrandt had taught
him to draw and paint), as a soft light falls on his face and on the sheaf of
paper on the desk he leans on.
But Rembrandt also continued to wield his mighty weapons against his political
enemies: In 1653, he painted “Aristotle Contemplating the Bust of Homer” the
astonishing masterpiece, which demolishes the sophistry of Aristotle, who is,
not surprisingly, the official philosopher of Dutch Calvinism. Here, we see
Aristotle, his right arm extended, hand resting on the head of a bust of Homer.
But irony of ironies: It is Aristotle who is blind—his eyes don’t see— while
Homer, who was sightless, “sees” with his mind, his head bathed in light.
Perhaps Aristotle, who claimed that all knowledge is derived from the senses,
thinks he can learn from Homer by placing his hand on the poet’s head. Pity the
poor philosopher, says the Rembrandt speaking to us from this portrait: All his
fame, the heavy gold chain he wears, his splendid garments, will never bring him
closer to the truth.
Rembrandt’s painting, “Aristotle Contemplating a Bust of Homer” (1653),
demonstrates his deep knowledge of history, literature, and philosophy:
Aristotle only “knows” what he can learn through his senses because he does not
believe in the Spirit and indeed hides the Spirit from the rest of Humanity, but
the blind poet Homer, sees with his mind using the Light of the Soul -
Illumination.
Aristotle, and agent of the
Babylonian Secret Service, was responsible for the poisoning of Alexander the
Great. His other work was the, "Dumming Down" of all science and mathematics
through preference for logic and deduction, and the ignoring of, "Hypothesis"
which alone can give that Quantum Leap of Genius.
For the ruling elite to
maintain superiority over the rest of the population is the reason behind
Culling the intelligent through pogroms like the Inquisition, The creation of
endless Wars solely to Bomb populations back into the stone age, and sending
their intelligent sons to be traumatised and killed off in war - also through
Famine Creation, Poverty, Dummed Down Education, and Low Scientific Level... The
ancient methodology for retaining their power over the whole World for all time.
This is why it is the way that it is.
The Phoenix
By 1658, Rembrandt had begun to emerge from bankruptcy and to put his affairs in
order once again. He had lost his home and his great art collection; and his
mistress Hendrickje had been expelled from the Dutch Reformed Church for
living in sin with the artist. His former patrons and friends had abandoned him.
But Rembrandt was not defeated. That year he produced one of his most personal
and innovative prints, “An Allegory: The Phoenix” (Figure 8). In this etching,
Rembrandt takes the mythical story of the fabled bird that consumes itself, and
then rises from its own ashes, restored to youth.
“An Allegory: The Phoenix” (1658). Rembrandt made this etching as he began to
emerge from a long period of personal and financial tragedy. But he was
undaunted. Like the legendary Phoenix, he rose from the ashes, and went on to
produce his most sublime works over the next decade.
Although Rembrandt had
depicted hundreds of images from the life and Passion of Christ, surprisingly,
he produced only one Resurrection, and that, at an early age (1630s). Perhaps
the “Phoenix” was Rembrandt’s secular metaphor for his own “resurrection” from
the humiliation and defeats he had suffered.
In Rembrandt’s image, the Phoenix stands atop a huge pedestal, as two putti
blare forth the news on their trumpets that he has risen; a huge Sun, whose rays
penetrate the composition, rises behind him. A youth, whose dramatically
foreshortened figure lies at the base of the pedestal, and whose head extends
over the edge of the picture into our space suggests nothing so much as a
Classical Greek statue, now fallen.
But Rembrandt’s Phoenix is not the splendid bird of myth; missing are the sharp
beak, long talons, and luxuriant plumage. Instead, he is an “ugly duckling,”
whose ability to fly is by no means certain. Surely, this is Rembrandt himself,
risen from the ashes of his hardships, ready to take on the world again. He is
conscious of his immortality; he knows he will outlive his enemies.
Self-Portraits
No other artist known to us reproduced his own image so many times (50-60
paintings; dozens of drawings, engravings, and etchings) as did Rembrandt, over
such an extended period of time; in fact, it was rare for an artist of
Rembrandt’s time to depict his own image at all. For example, neither of his
famous contemporaries, Johannes Vermeer (1632-75) and Franz Hals (c. 1580-1666),
produced a single self-portrait. Rembrandt has left us his autobiography in
these critical self-examinations.
“Self-Portrait as the Apostle Paul” (1661). Rembrandt clearly identified with
Paul; like Paul, the artist lived not for the pleasures of this world, but to
create something immortal and universal.
In 1661, Rembrandt painted a “Self-Portrait as the Apostle Paul” That
Rembrandt saw St. Paul as an “alter ego” or “soul brother” is shown by the fact
that he executed a number of paintings and etchings of the saint, including one
of Paul in prison. The universality of Paul’s mission, to build a movement of
Jesus-followers within the Roman Empire, no matter the threat to his personal
safety, and ultimately, his martyrdom, resonated strongly with Rembrandt.
Unlike earlier portrayals of Paul, Rembrandt did not depict him as Saul, at the
moment of his Damascus Road conversion, but later, during the period of his
evangelization, in prison, and writing his Epistles. In this work, a bright
light illuminates the Apostle’s features; the brightest light though shines on,
and from, his illuminated mind.
The only other bright spot is the book which he holds (this would most likely be
the Greek-language Old Testament; the Gospels would not be written down for at
least 20 years after Paul’s ministry. Paul letters were the first writings of
the Apostles). Paul/Rembrandt’s expression is complex: In it, there is
resignation, humility, even sadness, but most of all, a powerful sense of
compassion. Only the deepest humanity, and the faith that gives him the courage
to confront his immortality, can sustain him.
The importance of compassion, as defined by the great poets and philosophers of
the German Classic: Schiller, Lessing, and Mendelssohn, in the development of a
beautiful soul. The beautiful soul, “is the happiest when other people become
beautiful souls, when other people are creative, when other people accomplish
all the things the beautiful soul wants to accomplish for him or herself.”
Could there be a better
example of this idea than that immortal, beautiful soul, Rembrandt van Rijn?

ENHANCEMENT WITH
JEAN, ON THE COSTA BRAVA, SPAIN
I have been working for over 12 years with many well
known techniques including Transcendental meditation and Kriya Yoga, Subud, A
Course in Mircles and the Sedona Method.
Although I have made good progress with these techniques
I now consider these to have been preliminary techniques to prepare me for
Energy Enhancement.
These methods that I have tried before simply don’t
provide for the systematic identification of Energy Blockages or contain the
Advanced Techniques for the removal of the energy blockages to
enlightenment that Energy Enhancement does.
If you are serious about self-improvement, growth,
change, enlightenment! Then the Energy Enhancement course is for you.
If you are tired of all the many systems of meditation
which leave questions unanswered and where the path to enlightenment is ill
defined and uncertain then don’t delay end the suffering as soon as possible
– learn Energy Enhancement.

Satchi, please accept my total
respect and gratitude for everything you have imparted to me over the short four
weeks I have been here. You are a huge light in this world and long may you
shine. For everyone reading this, get your asses over to see these people, your
lives will be changed forever and we don’t get many chances in this world to be
able to achieve that and there are defiantly not many people in this world like
Satchi and Devi who can do the business like this.
I am going back to England in a few
days time and I wanted to sum up how I feel about this incredible journey I have
been on here in Rosario with Satchi and Devi...

"Energy Enhancement Stage Four is to expand
the meditation to include energy from above from
the central sun, the macrocosmic orbit. Previously Satchidanand had psychically seen,
identified and
removed a blockage that he saw at the top of my head that he felt reduced my
energy level by 30%. This was in fact the exact figure that my homeopathic
therapist had told me from his Vega test, about two weeks before. However I
developed a headache during this stage, which disappeared when I had
transmuted 2 more blockages by myself in the meditation.
Once this stage was reached I had tremendous energy!"

Here is a Testimonial about our Three Level Energy Enhancement Course over One
Month With MS, Human Resources Director Europe/Asia of a large Fortune 500 US Multinational Company
Looking for a way to spend a productive month in beautiful surroundings with great people?
Well I'm very happy to recommend Energy Enhancement run by SOL in Spain and to be specific Satchidanand and Devi Dhyani.
Initially I was looking for some Yoga and meditation to mark a significant change in my life and to enhance my general health and wellbeing.
By accident I came across the SOL Web site over a year ago and just noted it - made a few enquiries and did nothing other than to file it for future reference.
One year later I called to follow up and arranged to come and do the full Energy Enhancement programme for 4 weeks.
I was not sure
if this was wise, as I knew nothing other than what I had read on the web site and the testimonials, which I was a bit sceptical about!
However, I am now adding my own because if you read this you might be a bit like me.
Don't hesitate - go for it!
Satchidanand and Devi Dhyani met me at Barcelona Airport and so my introduction and initiation into EE began.
It has been a great month,
at the end of which I am both a Yoga Teacher and Reiki Master as well as having learnt through experience built on the teachings of Energy Enhancement, some of the worlds most sustainable and proven philosophies and techniques.
In addition to the actual programme of learning Satchi and Devi were congenial and attentive hosts,
flexible in their approach to meet my needs as well as those of the course programme.
All in all I can say that this month has been well spent and has provided me with a solid foundation on which to continue to grow and develop in the months and years to come both personally and professionally.
Satchi and Devi, thank you for your unfailing good humour, hospitality and generous sharing of your own giftedness during my stay in beautiful L'Escala.

THE WEATHER IS HOT AND YOU'VE BEEN STANDING A LONG TIME.
TA HUI GAVE A SHOUT AND DESCENDED FROM THE SEAT.
It is sad to have come to the end of Ta Hui's sutras. It has been an immensely rich pilgrimage, going step by step as Ta Hui was growing, as he was transforming, as he was beginning to change from an intellectual into a mystic.
It was great just to watch the transformation from intellect to intuition, from mind to meditation, from an ordinary human being into an immortal... the explosion that happened to him. We have also shared a little bit of light, just by being alert and aware.
These are the last sutras. They are conclusive; they conclude his whole experience, hence they have great potential.
IF YOU WERE A MAN... and by man he means only a man of meditation. A man who is not a man of meditation is only a man in name; there is not much difference between him and other animals. Animals are violent -- so is man; animals are competitive -- so is man; animals are jealous -- so is man. Animals are also capable of thinking -- though not much, but still there is not any qualitative difference.
The only thing that creates the difference is meditation, because no animal has shown the capacity of being meditative. Even in the vast humanity, only very rarely a man comes to the height of meditation. Hence Ta Hui is perfectly right when he says, IF YOU WERE A MAN, A REAL CH'AN MAN...
`Ch'an' is Chinese for meditation. He is saying that you become authentically a man only through meditative transformation, and he is saying it now on his own authority. He has been a man of intellect; he began his journey as a thinker. He is ending his journey as a thoughtless silence. He certainly has the authority to define man: he has passed through the fire test himself, he has proved himself a man.
Man, according to all those who know, is the capacity of going beyond the mind, the capacity to become a no-mind, the capacity just to be without a single thought stirring within you. Once you have known this vastness, this silence, you will not ask any question about existence. Not that you know all the answers -- you don't know even a single answer -- but all questions have disappeared, hence the need for any answer has also disappeared.
In this state of no questions, no answers, just a pure consciousness, a mirror reflecting nothing... just being yourself, without going anywhere, remaining herenow... you attain to the ultimate bliss which every human being has been seeking for centuries, from life to life, but goes on missing because his search is in a wrong direction: he is always looking outside, and the treasure is inside.
He is searching in the temples and in the synagogues and in the churches, and the person for whom he is searching everywhere is just within him. If he can stop all his searching, all his desiring, all his going away -- just for a single moment -- the revolution happens. Suddenly he is no longer a beggar, no more longing, desiring, hoping, waiting. Suddenly he has become the master.
There is an ancient story... A king had become very old, and he had only one son. He consulted a great sage to whom he had always looked for advice, and who had always given rare insights into any problem that he had brought to him. He said to the sage, "I am old. I have only one son, and he is going to succeed me. A vast kingdom I am leaving in his hands, not knowing whether he is capable... will you suggest some way that I can become certain?"
The wise man, the old sage, suggested something very strange, and it was followed. The prince was sent in a chariot outside the kingdom. His clothes were taken away and he was told that he had been expelled from the kingdom, and the clothes of a beggar and a begging bowl were given to him. He could not believe it. He said, "What crime have I committed?"
The charioteer said, "I know nothing. I am simply following the orders given by your father. You are not allowed to enter the kingdom, otherwise you will be put in jail. So simply escape far away." And the chariot returned to the palace.
The young man was shocked. This is ridiculous behavior; has his father gone insane? He was hoping to become the king and he has become a beggar. But what can you do? Soon he was feeling hungry, thirsty and although it was very shameful, he had to beg. He started begging on the street like an ordinary beggar.
Years passed; he completely forgot that he used to be a prince, he settled. Man has immense capacity to adapt to any condition, and when something is absolutely inescapable you cannot do anything else. A certain afternoon, in the hot sun, he was standing before a hotel asking people, "I have been hungry for two days, give me something." A few coins had been dropped into his begging bowl... and then suddenly he heard the noise of a golden chariot. In a second, instantly, he remembered his own chariot. Strange... it looked exactly like that.
The chariot stopped and the same charioteer -- although he had become very old -- got down, touched the feet of the prince, gave his robes and his crown back to him, and said, "Drop it! Throw away all those beggar's clothes. First come to a good hotel; take a good bath, clean yourself, dress well. Your father is dying and he has remembered you; he wants you to come immediately, because he wants to give you the kingdom and the key to his treasures with his own hand."
The people from whom he was begging gathered around. They could not believe their eyes, not because of the clothes, the crown, the golden chariot, but because the face of the young man immediately changed. His eyes had a different look, his pride returned; now he was standing there with great dignity and grandeur. The beggar disappeared in a split second.
Just a moment before he was a totally different man; just a moment later a discontinuity had happened. The abruptness, the suddenness... even he could not believe it, because he could see the change even in his consciousness. The way he walked, the way he sat in the chariot, everything had changed; the way he looked at people -- it was not with the same eyes. Just the remembrance, nothing else had happened; just the awakening of the fact that he is a prince and is going to be a successor to a great kingdom, just words... but all is changed.
The same kind of miracle happens through meditation: you suddenly recognize that a great kingdom belongs to you, the kingdom of the whole existence; that you are not a beggar who was ambitious for trivia, who was desiring this and that, who was hoping to have more power, more prestige. All the symptoms of being a beggar... as one enters into meditation, all these symptoms disappear. One suddenly finds one has the kingdom, one's home; one lacks nothing, one is entire, complete, fulfilled.
It is for this reason that Ta Hui says, IF YOU WERE A MAN, a real meditative man, WHEN YOU HEARD ME SAY, "WHERE ARE THERE OLD ADEPTS APPEARING IN THE WORLD?" YOU SHOULD HAVE SPIT RIGHT IN MY FACE.
These are special ways of Zen; they are not understandable outside the world of Zen. Now Ta Hui is a master and he is saying, "When I was talking nonsense, if you were a real man you would have spit right in my face. You could have stopped me."
It happened that one bishop in Japan wanted very much to see a Zen master, Lin Chi. He had heard much about him, and he was certain that if he went to him with THE BIBLE and read a few beautiful statements of Jesus, particularly the Sermon on the Mount, he was sure that he could convert Lin Chi into being a Christian. And to convert Lin Chi meant converting thousands of his followers; even the emperor of Japan was one of his disciples. Going into the mountains and doing the tedious journey was worth it.
The bishop reached Lin Chi and said that he wanted to read a few sentences from his master, that he hoped that Lin Chi would like them, and that he wanted also to know what Lin Chi thinks about them. And he started to read those beautiful statements of Jesus. When he had read two or three statements, before he could go further, Lin Chi said, "Stop all this nonsense! Whoever has said these words will become a buddha in some future life, but right now it is all gibberish. Just take it away."
The bishop could not believe it; it was not mannerly. Lin Chi could have disagreed, he could have at least been polite. But people don't understand that Zen does not believe in being polite, it believes in being authentic. It is not important to follow the etiquette of the society; to Lin Chi what is important is to state exactly what he feels and what he sees.
Lin Chi said, "These statements right now are meaningless. But whoever has said them -- I don't know him and I don't want to know him -- will become a buddha in a future life. He is on the right lines, but he has to travel much." In Zen it is understood that there is no question of manners, there is no question of etiquette. Those are all part of the ordinary society.
So when Ta Hui says, "If you were really a man of meditation... There were many moments when I was talking nonsense, when I was only an intellectual but speaking as if I knew, and I knew nothing. You remained silent and you heard me as if a buddha was speaking to you. If you had known a little bit of meditation, you would have spit right in my face."
IF YOU DON'T ACT THIS WAY, BUT ACCEPT THINGS AS SOON AS YOU HEAR SOMEONE BRING THEM UP, YOU'VE ALREADY FALLEN INTO THE SECONDARY.
I have explained to you the meaning of the word `secondary'. It has great significance in the terminology of Zen. The secondary means the borrowed -- you have already fallen from the original to the borrowed. If you are a man of meditation and you are listening to a learned man and you don't stop him, you have already fallen into the secondary. You have lost touch with the primary source of knowing. But this strange behavior, although authentic and sincere, has not gone outside the boundaries of Zen.
I have loved Zen, particularly because it does not care for anything except the true, except the experienced. It does not even allow anybody to pour nonsense into your mind. It is very difficult for a man who knows nothing of meditation to talk to a Zen master. They live in two different worlds; communication seems to be impossible.
You go on behaving the way you are expected by the society to behave, and the Zen master behaves the way his consciousness responds in the moment. He has no ethical code to follow, no discipline beyond his own consciousness. Naturally he is strange and wild, but that is his beauty. It is the same beauty as you will see in the wild animals -- their innocence, their authenticity.
Man's politeness is nothing but another name for cunningness: you go on listening to people, smiling, and inside you are saying, "When is this idiot going to stop?"
A man used to come to my house; he was a friend of my grandfather. I had seen them talking, and he was really a nuisance, bringing all kinds of gossips, wasting time, and my grandfather would go on saying, "Good, very good."
I said one day, "There is a limit to everything. This story goes on every day and it is not even that he brings new gossips and stories. I have heard those things many times, and still you go on!"
My grandfather said, "Do you think I hear him? I go on doing my own thinking; just in between I give him the incentive to continue. The poor fellow needs someone to listen."
I have remembered it particularly because everybody is in need of somebody to listen to him -- it doesn't matter what he has to say. Bertrand Russell in one of his great insights says, "In the future, I can see a possibility that there may be millions of psychotherapists in the world. That will be the biggest profession."
It is becoming bigger every day. The only reason for its growing is not that it helps people to become healthy; the only reason is that it allows you to speak all kinds of nonsense and a learned, well-educated man listens to you. Of course you have to pay him....
I have heard about one great psychoanalyst who was tortured by a billionaire. He was talking such rubbish and such nonsense... but he was paying, so there was no question of stopping him. He was paying the greatest fee you could want, and he would go on hour after hour. It was good business but it was very tiring and very boring.
One day the psychoanalyst said to him, "Because I have to give two or three hours to you, I cannot look after my other patients. So I have found a small strategy: I will leave my tape recorder, and you go on talking; everything will be taped, and in the silence of night I can listen to it. It will be more valuable too because my mind will be completely free of business and office work and other patients, so I can pay deeper attention."
The billionaire said, "It is a good idea."
The next day he came, went to the couch and within two minutes he was going out. The psychoanalyst looked from his chair and asked, "What is the matter? Where are you going?"
The billionaire said, "I have talked to my tape recorder; now my tape recorder is talking to your tape recorder. I thought, `Why should I waste my time? I also have many other things to look after.' My business is far bigger than yours -- and late in the night, in silence, I can also talk more freely. It is a good arrangement."
Bertrand Russell says that there will be many, many people getting involved in psychoanalysis just for the simple reason that people will be so much burdened with their thoughts and nobody will have the time to listen to them; they will need professional listeners. That's what a psychoanalyst is -- a professional listener. He does nothing... but even listening helps; one becomes unburdened.
My grandfather said, "It doesn't matter what he says, or who listens -- I am thinking my thoughts... That poor fellow cannot find anybody."
My grandfather died, but that man continued to come. My father was very much disturbed: "This is a nuisance; now who is going to listen to him?"
I said, "You are of course because I am not going to listen. While you are alive, it would not look right that I should listen to him. First you die, and then if he is still alive, I will listen -- but right now it is your responsibility."
He said, "You are strange. You don't have anything to do; why can't you just sit and listen to him?"
I said, "Right now it is your duty. Your father has died, not my father. You are getting the whole heritage, and this man is part of the heritage."
One day he was very busy and the man knocked. He told me, "Somehow tell him that I am not at home."
I went out and I told the man, "He is inside, very busy, and he has asked me to tell you that he is not at home. So you please decide for yourself. It is good that you should go."
He said, "What! He is inside and he says he is not?"
I said, "That's exactly the truth" -- and my father was listening.
So that man said, "Then I will come in."
I said, "That is up to you."
My father was very angry at me. When the man left, after torturing him for two or three hours, he took great revenge on me.
I said, "You are taking revenge on me when in fact you are angry with that man. It is your father who has given you the heritage; I am nobody in this whole business."
He said, "But why did you say that I am in? I have told you that I am out."
I said, "I told him the whole thing, why should I lie? You insist always when you ask me things like `Where have you been?' -- you say, `Don't lie.' Now remember, never say to me, `Don't lie.' Sometimes one needs to lie... do you understand?"
He said, "This is a different thing."
I said, "It is the same thing. You have taught me continuously to be true, and I will remain true whatsoever the consequence, unless you tell me that I am allowed to lie and you will not again insist on the truth..."
He said, "Let me think about it, because it is a very difficult decision to allow you to lie. It is better to listen to that man. There is no need to lie; you should say the truth. You have done right."
But I said, "You should start doing the same as my grandfather was doing. He was never tired; in fact by the evening he used to wait for him. Many times he used to ask me, `Has he not come yet?' Just learn the secret."
He said, "What was his secret? -- because I never came close to them. I never even wanted to be acquainted with this man."
I said, "His secret was very simple: he never listened; he just allowed him to talk. It will take a little time, but it is a good discipline."
In society you go on tolerating people telling lies. You know they are lying, but you will not say to their face, "You are lying." You will pretend that you agree. Society requires you to be hypocrites, and that is the difficulty.
When you come in contact with Zen, hypocrisy is not allowed at all. It is the only small current of non-hypocritical people in the world. Otherwise, can you think of a master telling his disciples, "If you think I am talking nonsense you should spit on my face"? Masters have been beating disciples; that can be understood. But in Zen it happens that disciples have beaten masters.
There was a monastery which had two wings, and the master had a beautiful cat. Every monk -- there were one thousand monks: five hundred in one wing, five hundred in the other wing, and just in the middle was the master's hut. The cat used to wander in this wing, in that wing, and it was so beautiful and so loving that in each wing every monk tried to keep that cat as long as possible. Sometimes there was a quarrel, a fight, because the left wing wanted the cat and the right wing was not allowing them.
The master became tired. One day he called all the monks and said, "It has to be decided; this cat has become a disturbance. Say something, do something which shows your meditation -- anybody, from any wing. If you cannot... If somebody can act in a way that shows that he has meditative insight, the cat will be given to that person, to that wing. If nobody can say anything, that leaves me only one possibility: I will cut the cat in two, and give each wing half of the cat."
The monks were shocked. They tried, but nobody could find a way to show their meditation -- what to do? what to say? -- and you cannot deceive the master, that is absolutely certain.
Because nobody came out, the master had to cut the cat in two. He gave those dead pieces of the cat to both the wings. The monks were crying, but it was no use: the master had given them the chance, but they could not show their meditation.
Just then Rinzai, a monk who had gone to do some work in the city, came back and heard the whole story. He could not understand that one thousand monks were there, "and you could not prevent that old fellow from killing the cat?" He went in and slapped the master.
The master said, "It is too late. If you had been here before, the cat would have been saved."
This can happen only in the atmosphere of Zen. The disciple hits the master and the master accepts with gratitude and says with appreciation, "Where have you been? If you had been here, the poor cat would still have been alive. Not a single monk came to tell me, `What nonsense you are talking! Killing the cat...' And that would have been enough. But they all remained silent, they could not give any response."
Zen has created a very special world -- not of etiquette and manners and hypocrisy, but simply of authenticity. Rinzai hitting the master is simply showing the truth as he feels it: "It was absolute nonsense to kill the poor cat, there was no need. The very idea was wrong and you need a good slap for that. Never do such a thing again."
Anywhere else in the world such a disciple would have been expelled. But in Zen the disciple was appreciated: "Where have you been? You should have been here. You could have saved the cat, you could have prevented me killing unnecessarily a poor cat, a beautiful cat. It was my cat, and I will miss it."
If you go on listening to something that you feel in your consciousness and awareness is nonsense and stupidity, you should do something to stop it; otherwise you are yourself falling into the secondary. The secondary means you are falling from truth into the world of lies; you are falling from silence into the world of language, society, social manners.
AGAIN, HAVEN'T YOU SEEN MASTER LO SHAN'S SAYING? "THE MYSTIC GATE HAS NO DOCTRINES." Doctrines are created by philosophers; doctrines are created by those who do not know. It is a very strange phenomenon: those who do not know feel the wound of not knowing. It hurts. They want something to cover it up, so they create doctrines -- Christian doctrines, Hindu doctrines, Jaina doctrines. Those doctrines help them to forget their ignorance. They don't become wise, they don't become enlightened, but for the time being the device helps them to forget that they are sick, that they are ignorant.
But it is dangerous. It is always good to know that you are sick because then some treatment is possible. It is dangerous to hide your ignorance because that will keep you ignorant forever. The more you hide it, the more it goes on growing like cancer inside you. Ignorance is exactly the cancer of the soul. Don't hide it; if it is there, recognize it so that it can be removed, it can be operated upon.
Gautam Buddha used to say again and again, "I am not a philosopher, I am a physician." You can see why he insisted that he was not here simply to cover up your wounds, to give you a false notion that you know; he was here to heal you. Healing needs a recognition that you are ignorant. Just to recognize for oneself that, "I am ignorant and all my knowledge is borrowed," is a great beginning.
THE MYSTIC GATE HAS NO DOCTRINES, ESTABLISHES NO GENERAL PRINCIPLES. I have been asked throughout my life what my general principles are -- because every religion has its own catechism, its own established doctrines, principles, disciplines. I have been in difficulty to explain to people that I don't have any general principles, I cannot have -- and anybody who has is wrong, because life goes on changing. You cannot have fixed and established principles; they will become your prejudices, and in a changing life your prejudice will always create a distance between you and the real. You will act out of your prejudice, and your action will not be adequate because it will not respond to the reality.
Another small Zen story... There were two ancient temples, very antagonistic to each other. Their enmity had been very ancient, traditional, and their priests were not on speaking terms. Both the priests had two small boys as their disciples and as their helpers to assist in the worship, to bring things from the market, or to do other small things which those old priests could not do. Both had insisted to the boys, "Don't ask anything, don't talk, don't even say `Good morning' if you meet the other temple's boy on the way."
But boys are boys! They were very curious, and in fact the old priests had made them more curious. They were also feeling alone with those old people, they wanted to be friendly with each other -- and one day, finally, one boy dared. He stood on the crossroads, waited for the other boy to come, and he asked, "Where are you going?"
The other boy said, very philosophically, "Wherever the wind takes me."
The first boy was very much shocked. He thought, "My master is right that those people are very strange. It was wrong of me; I wanted to be friendly, and the answer he gave cut me short. It was not a friendly answer -- and I could not find what else to say to a man who is saying,`Wherever the wind takes me."
He told his master, "Forgive me, but out of curiosity I asked that boy just a simple question, `Where are you going?', and he said, `Wherever the wind takes me'. You were right. I am sorry. But I am feeling very much ashamed that I could not answer him, because I could not find in that moment what would be the appropriate answer to this."
The master said, "I had warned you but you didn't listen! Now remember, tomorrow stand in the same place, and he will come because he goes to the market. Ask him again, `Where are you going?', and if he says, `Wherever the wind takes me,' just tell him, `And if the wind is not blowing, are you going anywhere or not?'"
The boy repeated it, rehearsed it, prepared himself, became perfect by the morning, and reached the place one hour before. He was standing there repeating it in his mind. It was a question of his prestige.
The other boy came, and he said, "Where are you going?"
The other boy said, "Wherever my legs take me." Now the whole preparation was useless, because the answer was inadequate. He was at a loss what to do.
He went crying to the master. He said, "Those people are very inconsistent. He has changed his answer. Today he said, `Wherever my legs take me.'"
The master said, "Don't be worried. Prepare for the next answer. Tomorrow when he says `Wherever my legs take me' tell him, `If you were born crippled, lame, would you be going anywhere or not?' Just puzzle him. It is a question not only of your prestige; now it is a question of the prestige of our temple, of our whole heritage, our tradition."
And the boy tried. He could not sleep the whole night; many times in dreams he saw the other boy. In the morning he got ready, reached the place... The other boy came and he asked, "Where are you going?"
And the other boy said, "To fetch some vegetables from the market!"
Such is life. You cannot respond to life with principles, established doctrines. You have to be alert and conscious and responsive to the moment. You have to be unprepared. Life is not an examination in a school or college or university. It is not even for a single moment the same.
This morning, Ta Hui was saying, DON'T REMEMBER WHAT I HAVE SAID TO YOU YESTERDAY, BECAUSE TODAY I AM NOT GOING TO SAY IT.
And he was right: this morning it was raining so much, and now the whole sky has changed. There is no sign of any rain.
Life is constantly changing; hence those who want to be in tune, in synchronicity, in an organic unity with existence, can't afford to have fixed principles, general principles, established doctrines, philosophies. They can only have an alert and conscious being. Then whatever the situation, they will respond accordingly -- not according to any principle, but according to the situation that they are encountering.
There is a story in the life of the founder of Hassidism, Baal Shem-tov... One woman came to him and said, "I am without a child. Your master had blessed my mother, and because of his blessings I was born; otherwise my mother would have been childless."
So Baal Shem blessed her, but the blessing did not work. The woman waited and waited. Years passed and she came with anger saying, "You are thought to be a great master, greater than your own master, but your blessing has not worked."
Baal Shem said, "Did I say that it would work? Have I given you any promise?"
But the woman was insistent: "Then why has your master's blessing worked?"
Baal Shem said, "Your mother had not asked for a child... I was present. My master had blessings for everybody: whoever used to come, he used to bless; it was not especially for your mother. If you were born, it is just an accident. In the first place your mother had not asked and you have asked -- that makes all the difference. Your mother simply loved the master, and the master out of his love used to bless everybody.
"But the situations are different. First, your mother had not asked for anything special -- you are an accident, you are not a by-product of the blessings. Secondly, you asked -- and whenever one desires, one becomes incapable of receiving the blessing. Thirdly, my master used to bless everybody; it was just his habit. I don't bless everybody; it is not my habit. My master was himself, I am myself.
"You asked, and I simply thought, "The chances are fifty-fifty. If I bless this woman the chances are fifty-fifty that she may have a child -- why miss? If she has a child, my blessings have worked and there will be a miracle. If my blessings don't work, I know how to get out of it; I can prove that she is an accident -- nobody is produced by blessings.'"
One should live life without any prejudice and without any doctrines, without any religions, without any philosophies. Only then can one live in innocence, in purity, in spontaneity.
Master Lo Shan's statement has to be remembered: "THE MYSTIC GATE HAS NO DOCTRINES, ESTABLISHES NO GENERAL PRINCIPLES. IF YOU WANT TO SEARCH FOR IT, LOOK BEFORE THE SOUND."
I have told you that THE BIBLE says, "In the beginning there was the word, and God was with the word, and God was the word." Now, according to Zen it is rubbish -- because a word needs meaning; that's the difference between a sound and a word. When you listen to the waterfall, you don't say the waterfall is speaking words; you say, "There is the sound of running water." Sound is meaningless. Certainly there could not be a word in the beginning because there was nobody to give it meaning. It is better to say there was sound.
That is the standpoint of Hinduism. They say, "In the beginning was Omkar...." Om is just a sound, it is not a word. Hence in the Sanskrit alphabet there is no letter for om, just a symbol. It is not part of the alphabet; it is in the margin. In the beginning was om... just a sound.
But Zen goes still further. Master Lo Shan is saying, "IF YOU WANT TO SEARCH FOR IT, LOOK BEFORE THE SOUND" -- because sound needs at least two things to clash. That's why the sound of one hand clapping cannot be heard: there cannot be any sound. If you want to know the ultimate, look before the sound. What is before the sound? Before the sound is silence...
Now you can see these three statements: there was silence in the beginning; there was sound in the beginning; there was word in the beginning -- and you can see the difference. The word is the most superficial; the sound is a little better; but silence is perfect -- and if you don't say it, then it is even more perfect.
If you simply remain silent, without saying "silence"... if you are asked what was in the beginning and you remain just silent, not answering, that's exactly right. Otherwise silence, sound, word... and you go on falling into the secondary.
Remain in the primary, remain in the fundamental, remain in the ultimate. And the ultimate is beyond sound.
ALL YOU DISCIPLES OF BUDDHA, REAL MIND IS NOT FIXED, AND REAL WISDOM IS NOT BOUNDED. EVEN IF I LET THESE TWO LIPS GO ON TALKING -- FROM NOW TILL THE END OF TIME -- WITHOUT A BREAK, YOU STILL CAN'T DEPEND ON ANOTHER PERSON'S POWER: THIS IS A MATTER IN WHICH EACH AND EVERY PERSON IS FULLY SUFFICIENT IN HIS OWN RIGHT.
You don't have to depend on anybody else; you contain your own truth. You are absolutely independent in your being. Your freedom is absolute and there is no way to disturb it. You can forget it but you cannot lose it.
IT CAN NEITHER BE AUGMENTED NOR DIMINISHED THE LEAST LITTLE BIT. THE PATRIARCH SAID -- the patriarch always refers to Bodhidharma; he was the first patriarch in China -- HOLD TO IT AND YOU LOSE IT... In the very holding you show that it is separate from you. Your very holding shows your misunderstanding, your ignorance.
HOLD TO IT AND YOU LOSE IT,
AND ARE BOUND TO ENTER FALSE ROADS.
LET GO OF IT AND NATURALLY
ITS ESSENCE HAS NO GOING OR STAYING.
Let go of it and it is there. It has always been there. The truth is your very essence, so there is no need to cling to it. You are it, you cannot be otherwise.
JUST HAVE FAITH IN THIS TRUTH OF ONE MIND: IT CANNOT BE GRASPED, IT CANNOT BE REJECTED. THEN YOU SHOULD GIVE UP YOUR BODY AND YOUR LIFE RIGHT THERE. The moment you understand that your essence is eternal, you will drop the idea of my body, my mind, my life. The moment you become aware of the eternal in you, you will not confine it to my and mine. It is neither mine nor yours; it simply is. We are all part of one organic unity.
IF YOU CANNOT GIVE THEM UP, IT'S BECAUSE OF YOUR OWN HESITANCY -- ON THE LAST DAY OF YOUR LIFE, DON'T BLAME ME. Ta Hui is reminding you in his last statement that if you don't lose your ego, if you don't lose your identity with the body and mind, if you don't become pure meditation, then "don't blame me at the time of your death." Then you will see the body is going, the mind is going... and you had remained always confined to the body and to the mind, and you never looked beyond.
When the body and the mind are going, people fall unconscious. The shock is so terrible that they cannot remain conscious. Only a meditator can remain conscious because he knows. Even before death, many times when he was in meditation the body was lying there, the mind was there... and he was far above. He was a totally different phenomenon.
A man of meditation dies consciously; hence he does not die. He dies joyously because to him death comes as a freedom, as a freedom from the bondage of body-mind... as if suddenly all the walls have fallen and you have become the whole sky.
Ta Hui's last statement is so beautiful and so poetic: THE WEATHER IS HOT AND YOU HAVE BEEN STANDING A LONG TIME.
TA HUI GAVE A SHOUT AND DESCENDED FROM THE SEAT.
In Zen, the shout of the master has a significance which has not been understood anywhere else. There have even been masters who would not speak at all: they would simply ascend onto the platform, look around the audience, give a good shout, and go back again. Their shout would be as if suddenly a lion had come in and roared.
Just think of yourself coming across a lion, and the roar... Your mind will stop, your breathing will stop, your heart will lose a beat.
The Zen master's shout is simply a way to give you an experience of silence. He has tried in many ways, through many aspects, explaining to you -- and finally he gives you a little taste. He gives you a shout. Suddenly the shout... Naturally everybody becomes silent -- what has happened?
And the master is gone...
Leaving you in silence...
Giving you the taste which he has been explaining all along the way.
Nirvano has a stick hidden behind her; she wanted me to hit poor Niskriya. I said, "Niskriya is German and he will not understand it. Rather than becoming silent, he will stand up to fight -- and to disturb poor Niskriya's work is not right."
I had to persuade her to leave the stick; it is not needed here. I can manage without a shout. Whenever I become silent in the middle of my sentences while speaking, you become silent.
