The five sense consciousnesses are:
- eye consciousness (cakṣurvijñāna): brings seeing into cognition
- ear consciousness (śrotravijñāna): brings hearing into cognition
- nose consciousness (ghrāṇavijñāna): brings smelling into cognition
- tounge consciousness (jihvāvijñāna): brings tasting into cognition
- body consciousness (kāyavijñāna): brings touching and other types of bodily sensations into cognition
The cognition of the five sense consciousnesses is non-conceptual; it perceives a specifically characterized object (svalakṣaṇa ).
The Khenjuk states:
- In the case of nonconceptual [mental] cognition, there is no conflation with respect to place, time and features. The specifically-characterized phenomenon at its specific time is not liable to be mixed with the sound of a name.[1][2]
